This piece was commissioned by the 'Concert Band Vlamertinge' and is a plea for peace: the title translates as 'Peace on Earth'. This is expressed by means of the vocal contribution expected from the performers. In various places of the piece you can recognize, the words 'Et In Terra Pax' - an appeal for peace - at first jumbled together but later more rhythmically structured, developing into synchronized massed voices.The work starts with a pentatonic theme based on the notes D, E, G, A and C (taken from 'ConCErtbAnD VlAmErtinGE' and the name of the conductor, NiCk VAnDEnDriessChe). A somewhat sad melody is developed during an orchestral climax which leads to the firstexplosion of sound (measure 62 onwards). Suddenly the opening measures are recaptured, albeit with a differently colored sound: the words 'Et In Terra Pax' bring the first movement to a close. A restless Allegro follows which abruptly stops and is replaced by a calming cho-rale-like passage. A narrator reads aloud the poem 'Sonnet' by the young poet Charles Hamilton Sorley, who was killed during World War I. This poem fittingly puts into words the cruelty and senselessness of war. After the expanded recapitulation of the allegro, the broad, almost infinite atmosphere of the beginning returns. Clarinet and English horn play the pentatonic opening theme once more, this time broadly, while the words 'Et In Terra... Pax' are repeated again and again by the rest of the orchestra.The composer has purposely avoided all forms of aggression and bombastic sounds regularly used in works about war. Fear of violence and destruction can be heard and felt during the allegro passages. The charged opening makes way in the end for hope: May peacefulness replace cruelty in everyday life, too.

Scottish Dances is based on three Scottish traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond and Marie's Wedding. I. Cock of the North's name is used for multiple things or events. For example for a locomotive to a famous, it seems, delicious liqueur, and rallies to snowboard competitions. Furthermore is "Cock O' the North " a nickname of a famous Duke. (The 4th Duke of Gordon). In this composition Cock of the North (a Jig) is a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune, regularly played on tattoos by Pipe Bands. Not infrequently the drummers sing the text. Auntie Mary, had a canary, Up the leg of her trousers While she was sleeping Iwas peeping Up the leg of her trousers. II. " The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond " is about a sad story that took place during an revolt against the British. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had to retreat. Two of his men were captured. One was convicted and executed, while the other was released. The spirit of the executed soldier would arrive in Scotland via the 'low road' (underworld) before his companion, who had still a long way to go. You'll take the high road And I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye But me and my true love will never meet again On the Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond III. In a Scottish wedding, after the official ceremonies, there is often danced. This is called a ceilidh. For this we use traditional Scottish music such as "Marie's Wedding '. Mid dance we go back to the church, where a lovely song in honor of the couple sounds. Marie's Wedding has been recorded by Van Morrison (among many others). An Irish Lullaby - Stephen Bulla

Found in an old British publication and simply called "Irish Air," this endearing arrangement is a rhapsodic treatment that takes fragments of the melody and develops them into a large symphonic work. The freedom of tempi allows you to work with your band in a sensitively conducted way that only a beautiful piece like this will allow.There is always room on a concert program for at least one lush, melodic contrast piece. provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. A warlock is a male who practices witchcraft. This little tonal caricature by Kevin Kaisershot seeks to musically portray this enigmatic character in a somewhat less than frightening way. The tritone and its usage in the Middle Ages was forbidden, but today has become more associated with its rather "devious" sound and pops up every so often in music of that nature. The opening is that of the shroud of mystery surrounding the character. The main body of the piece is the swirling cone of energy that the character possesses, and the waltz section is a dance related section containing a bit of devious comic relief.

is a tone poem describing an imaginary machine of great size and power. The word "contraption" is defined as "a device or machine regarded as strange, incomprehensible, or makeshift." This concept has been applied to the construction of this musical composition. The creation of this piece was accomplished in the same way an inventor might build a physical contraption, in this case limited to three main component "parts" plus an interlude. Legend of a Giant is a composition for solo alto saxophone and Wind Band composed by the Belgian composer Kevin Houben. The composer dedicated this challenging saxophone concerto to the Spanish saxophone virtuoso Mariano Garcia. The work had its premiere in May 2021 in the Lemmensinstitute with the Wind Band of the LUCA School of Arts in Leuven (Belgium) conducted by Ivan Meylemans. Mariano Garcia is a full time professor saxophone at the LUCA School ofArts, the Conservatorio Superior de Musica de Aragon in Zaragoza (Spain) and the Wiener Akademie Musik (Austria). As in any classical concerto the saxophone soloist 'competes' with the ensemble: first alternately, in dialogue with each other, afterwards fraternally together. Moreover the ensemble is regarded as an equal partner, therefore also for the musicians of the group, this cinematic score presents a tough challenge. Legend of a giant immerses the listener in the world of the saxophone and challenges the soloist in the field of lyricism and timbre, but also on a technical level. In this way various aspects and modern playing styles such as bisbigliandos, double staccato, frullatos, glissandos, harmonics of overtones, pass in review. In a word: a tough 'challenge' for any saxophone virtuoso! A simplified version of the saxophone solo part also exists.

Conclusions is inspired by three of the worlds greatest astronomers; their lifes, work and pioneering conclusions. 1: Copernicus. Nicolaus Copernicus lived in the 15th century. He introduced the idea that the planets rotate around the Sun rather than the Earth. This was a new and controversial world view which was not accepted in his lifetime. 2: Galileo. Galileo Galilei lived about a hundred years later and is sometimes called "the father of modern science". He is credited with the discovery of Jupiter's four largest moons. His discoveries supported Copernicus' model of the Solar System, and also showed that objects rotate around other planets than the Earth. Galilei was charged with heresy, and had to recant his claim that the Earth revolved around the Sun. "And yet it does move", he is supposed to have said. 3: Newton. Isaac Newton is known for his theory about the law of gravity and how it affects motion. This theory enabled him to accurately calculate the paths of the planets in the Solar System, and was a third conclusion in the astronomical tradition. In the same way that the three astronomers' independent conclusions build on ideas that are common to all three, Conclusions is built up of three independent movements which all include references to each other (melodic, harmonic, inversions etc.) Duration: 11.00

Mercury is a concert march composed in a typically British idiom. In 1990, Jan Van der Roost wrote this piece on the occasion of the 15-year anniversary of his own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant. Like many British marches, the main theme is written in a minor key. Powerful and virtuoso themes characterise the first part of this march, while the trio melody is much more melodical, offering the tenor register to display its lyrical skills. Follows a dynamic passage for trombones and trumpets/cornets, leading to a "grandioso" version of the main trio melody and thus concluding this march in a magnificent way.Duration: 3.00
