Lyric Dances is one of Philip Lane's more recent compositions (2008). Since the movements relate so directly to each other, and are not practically stand-alone movements, the composer suggested that they be offered as a unit. Lyric Dances encompasses a variety of moods: inquisitive, somber, joyful, dramatic, to frivolous. The original score was written for small orchestra; the band version therefore has considerable doubling of parts, yet remaining true to the composer's colourful orchestration. Small to large bands should be very successful with this piece, and it is sure to have both educational value and audience appeal.

This long-lost Fillmore march was written as a bet with fellow composer John Klohr in an attempt to prove that music sold because of its merit rather than because of the composer's popularity. To camouflage its origins, Fillmore wrote the march under the fictitious name, "Gus Beans" and called it Mt. Healthy by selecting the title at random from a list of Cincinnati, Ohio suburbs. , by Robert Sheldon, is meant to elicit the feelings one might have while spending the day hiking in the Rocky Mountains. One of the most popular hikes is a climb up to Quandary Peak in Colorado. This mountain was so named because of the mineral outcroppings that confused the prospectors while searching for silver in the 1860s. While being one of the 58 14-ers in Colorado (mountain peaks above 14,000 feet in elevation), it is cited as being one of the easier climbs and is consequently very popular. This would be a great time to enlist your art department to have students display pictures of their mountain artwork or to project images of Quandary Peak, many of which can be found online and royalty-free, during the performance.
