£139.99Centenary 2019 (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jan
Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. Awakening Village, the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. Bintje Monument was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) who developed the well-known potato variety called bintje. The finale, Journey into the Unknown, refers to the band's memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of the folksong and fragments from The Star-Spangled Banner. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanising rhythmical passages.Duration: 10.15

This piece was written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Takayama Wind Orchestra, who also commissioned it. The historic city of Takayama draws numerous visitors from home and abroad, not just to see its well-preserved old houses and buildings but also because every year several historic processions take place, with beautiful floats. When these ride through the city, age-old melodies are heard played on wooden flutes, accompanied by muted drums. This image is evoked at the beginning of the work, followed by an archaic sounding melody in a typically Japanese pentatonic sequence, that develops throughout. In this challenging piece Eastern and Western influences alternate, creating a sensational and overwhelming musical effect! Duration: 9.45

Contrasts was written for, and dedicated to, trombone soloist Dr. Brett Baker. As the titles indicates, contrasting elements characterize this challenging piece. The slow movement Sounds has a somewhat dark and sombre atmosphere, with complex harmonies and special sound effects. However, the second movement, Caprice, is energetic, entertaining, virtuosic and somewhat whimsical - quite a contrast indeed with the first! Duration: 16.30

This work for soprano and concert band was originally written for a special occasion: the wedding of one of the composer's children. It therefore matches another piece written for a similar occasion, I Shall Love But Thee. The lyrics are from the book Respiro Neve by the internationally renowned art photographer Luca Artioli, who possesses poetic talent as well. The first movement is stately and serene as where the contrasting allegro is much more dynamic and cheerful, requiring the solid high register of the singer. The conclusion is festive and radiant, partly thanks to the contribution of a piccolo trumpet! This work is a wonderful addition to the band repertoire wanting to perform with an excellent vocal soloist!Duration: 6.45

Stepstones was commissioned by the Harmonie Victoria Titeng from Ttange (Luxembourg) for its 125th anniversary. The composer references the music of Rossini, who died 25 years before the commissioning band was founded. The second element this work refers to the legendary conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein who was born at the time the band celebrated its 25th anniversary. This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell's Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme: these movements not only elaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own: however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme. Duration: 11.30

Glorioso was commissioned by, and is dedicated to, the Siena Wind Orchestra. The work opens after a short aleatoric intro, with an energetic and brassy one tone fanfare. The note F acts as an omnipresent note, and is also used as a bridge into the second, rather static movement. A noble sounding theme leads to an impressive climax, shortly followed by the spectacular and virtuoso finale, which is built on the musical elements that have been heard before. Stylistically, this sparkling finale is clearly influenced by Dmitri Shostakovich, hence the use of the famous signature used by the Russian Master: C, D, E flat, B (or C flat). A glorious finish to a special work that highlights various facets of the modern concert band.Duration: 15.30
