Josef Franz Wagner (1856-1908) was a military bandmaster and composer known as the "Austrian March King." He wrote "Under the Double Eagle," his most popular and enduring composition, in 1902 It later became the official march of the 1st Austrian Artillery Regiment Number 2. The title refers to the double eagle in the coat of arms of the Austro-Hungarian double monarchy. America's own "March King," John Philip Sousa, liked the piece enough to record it three times with his own band.

Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontyovich composed this famous Christmas Carol in 1914. The carol is based on a folk chant called Shchedryk. The composer was a supporter of the independence movement in Ukraina, and was assassinated by a Soviet agent in 1921.The carol was made famous after the adaption by Peter J. Wilhousky in 1936. Edward Elgar composed his Variations on an Original Theme, Op.36, popularly known as the Enigma Variations, between October 1898 and February 1899. It is an orchestral work comprising fourteen variations on an original theme. Elgar dedicated the work "to my friends pictured within", each variation being a musical sketch of one of his circle of close acquaintances. Nimrod (the mighty hunter before the Lord) has become the most played of the variations, and the movement is dedicated to Elgar's close friend Augustus Jaeger (Jager being German for hunter). The text for this carol was written by the Episcopal priest Phillips Brooks in 1865, and it was inspired by his visit to Bethlehem three years earlier. He asked his organist in the Church of the Holy Trinity in Philadelphia, Lewis Redner, to write a tune to his poem. Lewis Redner himself later told that he found it hard to write a good tune for the text. But the night before the first performance "I was roused from sleep late in the night hearing an angel-strain whispering in my ear, and seizing a piece of music paper I jotted down the treble of the tune as we now have it, and on Sunday morning before going to church I filled in the harmony. Neither Mr. Brooks nor I ever thought the carol or the music to it would live beyond that Christmas of 1868." Duration: 2.20
