With his memories of the magic of joy, fear and freedom, Cesarini seeks to bring the figures of the book to life musically in his Tom Sawyer Suite. Each of the first four movements describes a figure from the story. Tom Sawyer is depicted in the first movement, where the characteristic "cake walk" rhythm is used. The second movement depicts Huckleberry Finn. The third movement is slower, more expressively melancholic and is dedicated to Becky Thatcher. Downshifting - Dan Welcher
Commissioned by a consortium of 20 high school and university bands coordinated by Scott Hanna of the University of Texas at Austin, Downshifting is inspired by Welcher's joy of bicycle riding. Welcher explains in the program note: When I decided to write a piece for band that was basically entertaining and uplifting, it made perfect sense to call it Downshifting... With three gears on the front sprocket and seven on the rear, it's possible to keep one's legs going at a constant speed (for me, q = 126) while the bike itself may be moving very slowly or very quickly. I determined to capitalize on this in writing Downshifting, which keeps the same mathematical inner pulse,'shifting' (with a ratchet) as the terrain changes.

Christmas Bells are Ringing is a work of three holiday songs, all with the common theme of the joy and happiness that the ringing bells of the season can evoke. The introduction includes quotes from both Ding! Dong! Merrily on High and Jingle Bells before transitioning into the first carol, Ding! Dong! Merrily on High. The slower, lyrical section of the work is based on the moving melody of I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day. The closing section features Jingle Bells with a few fun surprises thrown in to lead the piece to a festive conclusion. A delightful work that will highlight any seasonal performance.
