An expressive solo for flute and band, this slow, blue-tinged piece is the result of the opportunity given by the Covid lockdown of 2020 to look anew at some old songs. In this one, a fairly straightforward but expressive melodic line is stated in its original form then repeated in a much expanded and occasionally florid setting, allowing the soloist to cover a range from low C up to top A. Eventually the music returns to the tranquillity of the opening.The band accompaniment was written in 2024 and is kept light but colourful allowing the soloist to be expressive without fighting to project through the texture.Duration: 3.45

The composition is upbeat, dynamic, and the notes dance. There is no story to tell, but simply a mood of cheerfulness and levity. In the Air expresses a consistently joyful, light-hearted and positive vibe through its mischievously playful motifs; the music blows through as if a light breeze, a fresh wind. Gerald Oswald was born in 1968 in Gross-St. Florian. He completed his education as a trumpeter at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He further pursued studies in conducting and composition under Franz Cibulka at the Johann-Joseph-Fux Conservatory in Graz, Thomas Doss at the Music and Arts Private University of Vienna, the Music School Leonding, and the C. General Sherman is a giant sequoia situated in the Sequoia National Park, in California. The naturalist James Wolverton named it in homage to the famous American general William Tecumseh Sherman. The impressive character of this sequoia inspired the composer, but the introduction could also evoke General Sherman arriving in the distance. Marc Jeanbourquin imagined how this giant could be in all its grandeur, attempting to climb into the foliage to find the light that filters from the top. But energetic passages indicate that the presence of the general is never far. The work concludes with a reminiscence of the initial theme, full of mystery.Duration: 5.15

What are the true qualities of a person? Outward beauty or inner values? Or perhaps a balance of the two? This question has probably been posed by everyone at some time or another, and the answer is as challenging as it is subjective. This is also the theme of this work. The poet and soldier Cyrano de Bergerac is known for his big nose and his great intellect. The 17th century novelist harbours feelings for the beautiful Roxane but is sure that this love will never be reciprocated. Roxane herself falls in love with the cadet Christian de Neuvillette, who is certainly handsome but could be described as stupid. Cyrano de Bergerac writes love poems on behalf of Christian to win Roxane's heart. And then there is the Count Guiche, who is married but also wants to make her his mistress. Christian and Roxane eventually marry and the furious Count Guiche sends Christian and Cyrano, who serve together in the Captains of Gascony regiment, to the front and, some months later, on a suicide mission. Shortly before the battle, Roxane confesses to her husband that she no longer loves him so much for his beauty as for his inner values. Christian is dismayed and begs Cyrano to tell Roxane the truth, but he can't bring himself to do so. Christian de Neuvillette dies in battle and Cyrano de Bergerac remains silent about the true provenance of the letters. Only much later does the truth come to light: scarred by the war, Cyrano visits Roxane in the convent where she has been living since Christian's death and confesses his love for her. He ultimately dies in Roxane's arms.Duration: 8.30

Wonderful Peace was written by Gustav Nordqvist and first published in 1921 by the publishing company Abraham Lundquist AB. Edvard Evers wrote the lyrics which describes Christmas as white and full of snow. It also depicts the rest of the Christmas blessing with wishes of light and peace for the holiday season. The song was one of the most performed Swedish Christmas songs last Century. Today we can enjoy numerous great recordings of the song.Duration: 2.15
