Severe funding cuts in 2015 had a huge impact on Austria's military bands. This piece is about the resurrection of these bands following a political decision in favour of the renowned military music organisation structure in Austria. 'The Rise of the Phoenix' is an impressive piece, full of bright, colourful melodies and an incredible positive ambience. There is a beautiful slow middle section with a touch of romance, leading to a spectacular maestoso finale in which you can hear a hint of a famous military signal (as also used in Von Supp's 'Light Cavalry Overture'). This work was commissioned by the civilian wind orchestra Shimizu il compagno, based in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, as a commemorative work for their 10th Anniversary. The world premiere was performed by the ensemble, conducted by Hiromichi Hamada in 2017. Having held discussions with the head of the orchestra, Tomohiro Tsuji, and members of the group, Satoshi Yagisawa settled on a central motif for this commemorative work: fellow, or companion, in the sense of the Italian il compagno, which features in the orchestra's name. The work also strives to describe the characteristic friendliness of Shimizu city, a place known for its warmth and kindness which is visible from both Mount Fuji and the sea. The composition is written in Yagisawa's typical dramatic style with an atmosphere of scintillating light and lyrical warmth, making it an excellent choice for opening a concert.Duration: 5.15

And There Were Shepherds is from The Christmas Oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach, intended for performance in church during the Christmas season. It was written for the Christmas season of 1734. The annunciation to the shepherds is an episode in the Nativity of Jesus described in the Bible in Luke 2, in which angels tell a group of shepherds about the birth of Jesus. The recitative begins with a tenor solo (the evangelist), followed by the soprano solo (the angel) describing the birth of Jesus. It concludes with the chorale, Break forth, O beauteous heavenly light, for full choir. This arrangement represents one in the Series of Band Arrangements compatible with David Willcocks' Carols for Choirs.

This work is dedicated to Manfred Obrecht, conductor and musical editor. Manfred asked the composer to write a piece that captures the changing colours and mood of a mountain when viewed from a relatively close distance. The work is in four sections:Awakening - early morning and the mountain is covered in cloud, eventually the sun bursts through and reveals the mountain in all its glory.Snow, Ice and Glaciers - between the rocky out-crops ther are layers of snow; slippery ice patches and icicles adorn the overhangs. In the larger crevices and valleys glaciers are formed.Vistas and Distant Peaks - when viewed from other high points one can see the mountain in full outline against the vast landscape.Avalanche - despite its beauty, a mountain can be a dangerous place and the accumulated snow may not be stable, it can easily tumble out of control. The slight twist of major tonalities at the very end reflects the way a sudden change in light can alter the whole perspective.

Following a compelling introduction, the descant presents a light, playful theme, which is repeated with a legato countermelody in the tenor register.
