RUNCORN BRIDGE (Professional Concert Band - Score only) - Carpenter, Gary
The through-arch bridge that is visible for miles across the Cheshire Gap is one of two adjacent bridges that cross both the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal. Its formal name is the Silver Jubilee Bridge is more usually known as the Runcorn Bridge. Runcorn Bridge begins with a brief, quiet, introduction featuring an oboe solo. There follows a lively march at the end of which a reflective interlude (or bridge!) based upon the tune that occurs twice in the march leads to a lyrical, almost nocturnal section spotlighting the alto saxophone. A variant of the first interlude leads to a scherzo-like section kicked off by the euphonium with a 'trio' that contains a Latin-inflected version of the oboe melody first heard in the introduction. A third interlude variant heralds a return of the nocturnal melody firstly as a horn solo but subsequently returning to the alto saxophone. Previous melodic materials gradually combine as an extended crescendo leads to a majestic, but short, coda that in a gesture of symmetrical solidarity refers back to the march tune utilised in the earlier interludes. Duration: 10:30. Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM160D Bells Across the Atlantic.

Minerva - Jan Van der Roost
Minerva by Jan Van der Roost was composed on the commission of the German "Musikverein Braunshausen" on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the orchestra. The composition, first performed on September 17, 1999, is not a street march but a concert march, just like Mercury and Arsenal. The use and variation of different rhythmic patterns gives the first part of this march a distinctly dynamic character. Two main themes are presented in several instrumental combinations. The theme from the trio, on the other hand, is characterized by a broad melodic approach using large intervals. This theme, wreathed by high woodwinds, is heard one more time after a contrasting newpart, but now in a somewhat slower tempo. The counterpoint in this part refers to the first part of the march. The brilliant ending suits a festive anniversary march!

Gridiron Centennial - John R. Bourgeois / arr. Thomas Knox
This is a very fresh march from the former director of the United States Marine Band. It is more of a concert march than a street march and makes wonderful use of the many voices of the band, from a delightful flute/piccolo melody to a lush low brass statement in which only the brass voices are heard, without constant pulse of percussion. In fact, the percussion parts are particularly wonderful in that they enhance the musical lines of the overall work rather than merely keeping time in typical march fashion. This is a terrific march for any band.
