The Peninsula marches (Salamanca and Vitoria) were written for the Coldstream Guards Band in celebration of two great battles the regiment was involved in and fought in Spain in the early 19th Century. The battle of Salamanca, fought in 1812, was one of the Duke of Wellington's most dramatic victories and this minor key march captures the turmoil of such a momentous event. The Battle of Solferino was fought in northern Italy in 1859 between Austria and the alliance of France and Sardinia. After 15 hours of fighting, the Austrians retreated leaving some 40,000 killed or injured. The medical forces that existed were unable to cope and many died from simple wounds. Swiss businessman and social activist, Henry Dunant, witnessed this suffering and set about a process that led to the Geneva Conventions and the foundation of the International Red Cross movement. Via Crucis (commissioned by Dr.Mathew J. George and the Symphonic Wind Ensemble of the University of St.Thomas at St.Paul, Minnesota) was inspired by a work of the same name by Franz Liszt.
