The Fever Tree - Rob Goorhuis

The composition ".The Fever Tree". in 2008 was commissioned by the Music Association of Central and Eastern Netherlands St.Willibrord as a gift to all its members on the occasion of the formation of a national music organization and the elimination of the music union for Central and Eastern Netherlands St.Willibrord. The fever tree is a controversial legend about St. Willibrord (658-739). The daughter of a pagan chieftain of Hoemannen that made the area around Heumen unsafe, was seriously ill. They feared for her life. The chief of the gang turned to predatory Willibrord, who same time in this region led mission. Willibrord commanded theman to repent and a headband of the girl to a certain special tree to hang. The desperate captain obeyed, and his daughter was a miraculous heal. Then came the anger of the Hoemannen against their leader, who in their eyes had committed treason by the group to convert. They abused themselves to him and killed him brutally. The daughter remained behind in great sorrow, comforted by Willibrord. The composition has the following scenes: - Andante moderato - the calling of Willibrord - Allegro moderato - Willibrord passes through the province of Brabant and try to people to repent - Vivace - Hoemannen terrorize the inhabitants of the area Heumen - Andante - the healing of the sick girl and the conversion of the centurion - Inquieto - the revenge of the Hoemannen - Adagio - elegy on the death of the chief

    Nature's Way - Gunther Schuller

From the composer: Nature's Way for intermediate level band was commissioned by BandQuest, a project initiated by the American Composers Forum. Their mission is for major composers of national reputation to write works of high quality that take into consideration the (still comparatively limited) levels of musical development--both technical and conceptual--typical of such ensembles. I eagerly accepted the commission and the challenges implied thereby--that is, to reign in my creative imagination to some extent and limit the technical/conceptual demands to a more moderate level than is to be found in my previous compositions for band. Nonetheless, since the process of rehearsing, studying and performing a work created specifically for the school student market is--and must be, in my view--primarily educational, it was very clear to me that my work would (and should) challenge the players at least to their top levels, and even a little beyond that. Thus Nature's Way in no way represents a compromise of my personal style, nor my long held concepts of form, continuity, texture, and instrumentation. I have known for a long time that young, inquisitive minds are eager to learn from new experiences, from previously never encountered challenges, that is to say, to be pushed--gently--to rise above their present levels of achievement. That's what education is all about. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. The long journey, which lasted three and a half years, led the Polos to cross Turkey, Central Asia, the Pamir, and the Gobi desert. The intelligence of the young Marco and his curiosity towards new customs and languages raises the interest of the emperor so much that he decides to keep him at his court by appointing him ambassador. This assignment takes him to newly conquered southern China and other parts of southern Asia. In 1292, the Great Kublai Khan agrees, albeit reluctantly, to let him go.Marco, after 17 years at his service, can finally return to Venice, but not before completing a last mission for the Grand Khan: accompanying his niece, Princess Kokachin, to Persia, where she would marry. A few years after his arrival in Venice, Marco finds himself involved in a naval battle against the Genoese people in which the Venetians are defeated. Consequently, Marco is captured and taken to prison in Genoa. There, he meets the storyteller Rustichello da Pisa to whom he tells the story of his adventurous journey. After his release, Marco returned to Venice and led a comfortable life until his death in 1324.

This work is based on a ``western sounding'' motif, and is a musical portrayal of the energy, enthusiasm, and sense of mission that was brought westward by our western pioneers. The music will sound reminiscent by using familiar "spy chords," a minor triad with added 6th or raised 7th, and the trademark chromaticism associated with the composer's favorite spy movies.
