Sea of Clouds - Robert Buckley

The third movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the seas of the moon, Sea of Clouds was inspired by a series of paintings done by Claude Monet in the London fog. Monet captured thegradations of light as it was affected by fog with ghostly images sifting through. This movement is mostly subdued and dreamlike, the music ebbing and flowing and eventually building to a vast wall of sound and then dissolvinginto silence. Dur: 5:05

    Serpent Sea - Robert Buckley

The fourth movement of Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the seas of the moon, Serpent Sea is animated, exuberant and somewhat over-the-top. It was inspired by the idea of two huge winged serpentsrising out of the waves and frolicking together in a wild, barbaric dance. The pair do, however, show a more graceful side every once in a while - represented by an exotic theme that starts in the clarinet and flute. The movementends with a wild flurry as the serpents vanish back into the sea. Dur: 3:50

One Small Step - Michael Oare

In July 1969, Apollo 11 completed its mission to the moon and Neil Armstrong made his famous proclamation 'That's one small step...' as he stepped out onto the lunar surface. Michael Oare's descriptive work for young bands captures the drama of that moment and offers the option of using actual audio clips from the mission for a truly magical effect.

    Foaming Sea - Robert Buckley

From Robert Buckley's grandly cinematic suite describing impressions of the seas of the moon, Foaming Sea (2nd movement) was inspired by the composer watching the ocean during a violent storm with waves exploding and crashing. The sense of excitement and exhilaration eventually leads to the calm after the storm, as turbulent darkness gives way to light. Dur: 4:40

Sea of Tranquility - Robert Buckley

Since the beginning of humanity we've been mesmerized by the moon, and what were originally thought to be seas appearing on the surface. The Sea of Tranquility is probably the best-known of these thanks to the landing of Apollo 11 in 1969. The first movement of Robert Buckley's four-movement suite captures the astronauts' sense of awe and wonder of their journey from lift-off, to weightlessness, to the triumph and jubilation of the lunar landing itself. Dur: 4:25

    Laudate - Thomas Doss

The work presented here, Laudate for solo soprano, mixed choir and wind band, draws inspiration from The Canticle of the Sun (Il Cantico di Frate Sole), written by Francis of Assisi shortly before his death. In this prayer, Saint Francis praises the sun, the moon and the stars, together with the whole of creation, immortalising them in his text. Thomas Doss has set the first words of each stanza to music in this modernistic pop-style composition: "Laudato si, mi signore". An impressive addition to the repertoire for band and vocals!

Wings of Apollo - Vince Gassi

NASA's Apollo program is known for landing the first humans on the moon in 1969. In this composition, your dauntless adventure begins with a powerful lift off. Once achieved, the main theme is presented by flutes, oboe, and then trumpets, with stabilizers provided by baritone, tenor sax, and eventually the remainder of the crew. Stage 1 boosters (a strong, rhythmic accompaniment) provide the propulsion needed to voyage through to a sea of tranquility (lyrical section). From there we journey to an adventurous transition and a final re-entry of the main theme. (2:35)

    Huron Indian Carol

The Huron Indian Carol, also known as T'was in the Moon of Winter Time, is presented in three contrasting settings. It will provide an excellent change of pace selection for any holiday or winter concert. The haunting melody is probably of French origin and was adapted by the 17th-century Canadian Missionary, Jean de Brebeuf. His original text was in the native Huron language. (Grade 2)
