Eastbound (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waespi, Oliver

Eastbound was commissioned by the Siena Wind Orchestra of Tokyo and may be heard as a sort of urban exploration. It begins with a massive chordal progression verging into a compact, groove-driven exposition of a relatively basic motif, going on to become increasingly virtuosic and hectic, reflecting the ever-present hustle and bustle in the streets of a megalopolis. The subsequent slower section brings about an Edenic atmosphere. Some soloists are featured with expressive lines, building up towards a short climax with a blues flavour, leading back to the fast music of the beginning. The heavily scored chords of the beginning reappear only towards the ending of the piece, like pillars of the musical bridge spanning the entire piece. Another acceleration finally leads to a turbulent close. Duration: 8.15

Hymn for a Hero (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Appermont, Bert

This composition was inspired by the life of the German cavalry general Hans Michael Elias von Obentraut (1574-1625). The heroism of the illustrious general is expressed in a majestic hymn. Hymn for a Hero can serve as a separate work but, if desired, it can also be integrated in the four-movement composition A Hero's Tale. Concretely, this means that this flex version, following the opening fanfare, can be played along with the first movement (bars 9-52). Thus, a youth or beginner band can make music and perform together with a band of adults or advanced players.Duration: 2.45

Spring March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Dagenais, Jonathan

Spring March by Jonathan Dagenais was written for the Saint-Edmond High School music program in Quebec, Canada. Spring March is a short, lively, and exciting concert march for beginner bands. With several thematic and humorous elements, this piece is a fun way to work on lightness of style, functional balance, tempo stability, and is perfect for teaching cut time and the traditional march form and structure. There are clear stylistic contrasts between all the different sections of the piece and the beautiful lyrical trio section offers a great opportunity to work on phrasing and support. With efficient and exciting percussion parts, the piece also offers interesting lines and melodies for every instrument. Duration: 3.00

Carnival (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Doss, Thomas

This work was commissioned by Marktmusik Timelkam to celebrate its 170th anniversary. It describes the cultural life and hustle and bustle of the band's home base, the Austrian town of Timelkam. Carnival pictures a festive procession starting at the marketplace and lasting well into the night. The work features many carnivalesque elements and is a joy for players to perform. There is a lot of merry activity going on in the music; people cheerily chatting in the inn; singing and dancing together and having fun. There is also room for a melancholy mood, accompanied by reminiscences about eternal goodbyes and searching for love. With the added musical representation of children's playing and pranks, a beautiful sunrise as well as a depiction of the churches and societies in town, this composition is not just an account of a carnival parade but a small portrayal of life.Duration: 11.30

William Byrd Suite, Two Movements from (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Jacob, Gordon - Wagner, Douglas E.

Of all of Gordon Jacob's major contributions to the British wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite (written in 1923) stands as his most-often programmed work. Though originally based on six movements from William Byrd's Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, this setting for developing band incorporates two contrasting movements including "The Earle of Oxford's Marche" and "Wolsey's Wilde." Like Jacob's wind band work, the music is not a mere transcription from the original keyboard collection, but rather stylized with his own inventive musical spirit for modern concert band. A wealth of material here that opens doors to teachable moments as musical textures (dynamic contrasts, articulations, scoring options) are continually changing. Bravo! Duration: 2.30

Colores (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

Colores is Spanish for colours, a word which this composition seeks to reflect and build itself upon. Musical colours, timbres, sounds, soft and sharp colour tones, sonorous effects... they are all present in this work. It is an abstract composition: completely lacking a story, scenario or any programmatic inspiration to guide the notes. The music speaks for itself. All sections are featured within a hugely varied work that demands a lot from the players. Pull out all the stops to produce the best possible result!Duration: 13.45

Please Don't Go (Concert Band - Score only) - Wiffin, Rob

There could easily be a backstory for this piece. It is ostensibly a Latin dance at samba tempo but it is slightly tinged with a sense of wistfulness and heartache and it is easy to work out where the imploring words of the title Please don't go fit into the melody. It is not technically difficult to play although it needs an appropriate sense of style and rhythm. Parts are comprehensively cued and the piece works without a bass guitar although it is desirable if possible. Similarly, not all the percussion instruments are vital although they add considerably to the feel of the music if you have them.

Psyche et Eros (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Franck, Cesar - Cesarini, Franco

Cesar Franck, composer, pianist, organist and music teacher, completed Cupid and Psyche, his sixth and last symphonic poem in 1887. It was first performed in Paris in 1888 and was a complete success, but the piece later fell completely into oblivion, and it was only thanks to some meticulous research that it has returned to concert halls. The intricate love affair between Psyche and Cupid is an original story of the Metamorphoses, written in the 2nd century AD by Apuleius. The tale is about overcoming obstacles in love and their final union. The symphonic poem is divided into three parts and calls for a choir. The movement that is the subject of this arrangement, Psyche et Eros, is positioned at the end of the second part. Franco Cesarini's version for wind orchestra carefully illustrates the nuances of the instrumental colours, and represents a real test aimed at demonstrating the musicality and interpretative skills of orchestras and their conductors.
