Commissioned by Carl Fischer for a school band series in the 1970s, A Little Night and Day Music is a classic of the modern band repertoire. The "Night Music" section is a study in color and atmosphere and makes striking use of contemporary instrumental techniques including clusters and aleatory. Choral Music - Jacob de Haan
Jacob de Haan was commissioned to write Choral Music a concert band from Dinxperlo (Netherlands). This band gave the work its premiere in 1997 during the World Music Contest in Kerkrade. Choral Music is based on the chorale Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen by the seventeenth century German composer Johann Schop. Contrary to the title, Choral Music has nothing in common with a traditional choral arrangement. This contrasting work has a flashing beginning and only much later following on several thematic changes does Jacob de Haan allow the chorale melody to develop into its original form. Following this episode the chorale becomes a toccata developing into a whirlwind finish.

Something of a classic in its brass band and piano versions! We are delighted, at last, to make this work available ith wind band accompaniment by the composer. Written in 1978, the work is constructed in three movements and is virtually a concerto for euphonium and band. The first movement begins with an unaccompanied motto theme, which uses all twelve notes of the scale but with a tonal feel. The slow second movement is based on an original song melody by the composer - 'The Eyes of God' - and affords lyrical and richly expressive playing that is typically euphonium. Movement three follows without a break - a capricious movement which ends triumphantly. Now available in versions for piano, brass band, wind band, and orchestra, Euphonium Music can be seen as a major contribution to the literature for the instrument. This work of festive atmosphere was written in 2000 for symphonic band, then the composer arranged it for symphony orchestra. In this piece, Lszl Dubrovay (*1943) parts with his special, hallmark concert band effects; rather, lively vibrations enriched with colliding seconds and distant overtones are brought to the foreground. The special sound is coloured by ornamental trills, appearing even in batches, and vibrating collisions in the high registers. The performance is rendered even more unique by the outer trumpets on both sides of the space. The trumpets and the flugelhorns can be divided into ten parts altogether, thus, the piece can be played by one ensemble or several bands together, as it is usual at the conclusion of large-scale festivals. This composition may be a great choice for festive concerts, since it is a solemn, innovative, and - by virtue of the free arrangement of the performing space - special work at the same time.
