In 1854, Verdi was in Paris to compose I vespri siciliani (1855), a commission from the Theatre of the Opera. The composer soon became intolerant to the requests of the French "Grand Opra" as he considered them too restrictive and cunning. "I'll be very happy when I have finished I vespri siciliani. An opera at the Opra is as tiring as killing a bull. Five hours of music?...Hauf!" Verdi declared. Following the first performance, the French composer Hector Berlioz wrote in the "Journal des Dbats" an article that read "We have to admit that in I vespri siciliani, the penetrating intensity of the melodic expression, the sumptuous variety of theinstrumentation, the fullness, the poetical sonority of the whole, the warm vivacity that shines everywhere and the passionate strength, although slow in disclosing (a characteristic feature of Verdi's talent), give the entire work a mark of greatness, a sort of majestic sovereignty more underlined than in Verdi's previous theatre productions."

Trumpet Fiesta spotlights four trumpet soloists. From the opening bars the music expresses a feeling of happiness. This swift and lively piece begins with a series of dynamic staccato passages from the soloists. The central section, in the minor key, contrasts with the beginning of the work and during this transition period there are only two solo trumpet parts. The first theme then quickly reappears before moving on to a peaceful and more melodic trio in which long and flowing melody lines allow the soloists to let the beautiful sound of the trumpet fully reveal itself. The sound pyramid then formed by the whole band leads this spectacular piece to a powerful finale.

Carl Teike (1864-1922) is one of the greatest composers of march music, being especially remembered for his traditional marches Alte Kameraden (Old Companions) and Graf Zeppelin. Both marches are well known throughout the world and thanks to their beautiful and catchy melodies they are often still performed. The march Graf Zeppelin is a tribute to Ferdinand Graf von Zeppelin, the famous German constructor of airships, who was a contemporary of Teike. In Greek Folk Song Suite, Franco Cesarini has elaborated on three songs belonging to this most ancient tradition. The first, O Haralambis, is in 7/8 time, a characteristic of a popular folk dance called kalamatianos. Originally, the song O Haralambis was sung to 'tease' during weddings with the text of the song refering to a young man who refuses to marry. The second movement, Stu Psiloriti, refers to an ancient song from the island of Crete. The third movement of the suite is based on the songVasilikos tha gino and is characterised by the sirtaki, probably the most popular Greek dance outside of Greece.
