Quail Creek Overture - David Gorham
This selection was commissioned by the Central Oklahoma Band Directors Association for the CODA Ninth Grade Honor Band. After an energetic opening, a lyrical legato section is introduced by a woodwind choir and answered by a brass choir before returning to the original excitement of the opening section. A beautiful slower section in 3/4 time follows before the opening section returns, taking the piece to a strong, bold ending.

Majestic Solemnity - Menno Bosgra
For this impressive opening work by Menno Bosgra, the composer uses a kind of brass band theme which is alternated with a solemn chorale. Both themes are orchestrated differently and each instrumental group takes turns playing. This makes the piece extremely colourful. At the end, both themes are combined with each other. This is a dynamic opening work for your concerts!

Toccata Festiva - Jan Van der Roost
'Toccata Festiva' was commissioned in 1994 by the Dutch Brass Band Championships. The wind band version was made a year later by the composer himself. Historically speaking, the toccata is considered to be one of the first independent instrumental forms for keyboard instruments. Originally the toccata was typically more or less improvised, later this musical form was given a more regulated structure. Both elements are used in the 'Toccata Festiva': on the one hand the different themes are developed freely, on the other, the piece has an orderly structure. It is in a three part form (quick-slow-quick) and includes both strong rhythmical figures and broad melodic lines. Partof the composition is written in a more or less archaic tone idiom, referring to the period from which the toccata form originates (16th century).

Happy Summer Song - Graydon A. Toms
This lighthearted piece is ideal for the Grade 1 band. Repeated notes in a sequential melody, simple counterpoint between the Woodwinds and Trumpets, interesting use of common Auxiliary Percussion instruments, a limited palette of rhythms and easy Low Brass/ Low Woodwind parts all combine so that you can program HAPPY SUMMER SONG with confidence. Whether you have a full complement of players or your instrumentation is a little "sketchy"; whether you have plenty of rehearsal time or that precious commodity is a bit rare, you can count on having this one ready in time for the show.

Mercury - Jan Van der Roost
Mercury is a concert march composed in a typically British idiom. In 1990, Jan Van der Roost wrote this piece on the occasion of the 15-year anniversary of his own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant. Like many British marches, the main theme is written in a minor key. Powerful and virtuoso themes characterize the first part of this march, while the trio melody is much more melodical, offering the tenor register to display its lyrical skills. Follows a dynamic passage for trombones and trumpets/cornets, leading to a "grandioso" version of the main trio melody and thus concluding this march in a magnificent way.
