Describing a stretch of Interstate 75 that crosses through Florida's Everglades National Park, Alligator Alley celebrates this noble beast that has remained largely unchanged from prehistoric times. The first theme ("Alligator's Theme") features the woodwinds (predominantly bassoons) while the second theme ("Hunter's Theme") is performed by the brass. The era of old-time concerts in the park comes back to life with "Side Partners." Composed by cornet virtuoso, Herbert L. Clarke, for himself and his long-time friend, Sousa Band trombonist Frank Holton, this delightful piece can be played by two cornets/trumpets, two trombones, two euphoniums, or any combination of these instruments. Feature your two outstanding brass players in this charming work. The accompaniment requires a minimum of rehearsal, and the solo parts are flashy without being overly demanding. An excellent choice also for community bands. Delightful music!

£121.00Ignatian Fanfare - John R. Bourgeois
Written for the centennial of Loyola University, New Orleans and premiered by the Loyola University Band on April 12, 2012 with the composer conducting. This fanfare is based on a motive from the Jesuit motto "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" ("to the greater glory of God") and is based on the notes A, D, G. The fanfare opens with timpani, a tintinnabulum of bells and brass, and wolf calls in the horns. A martial hymn tune appears which evokes the soldierly order of Ignatius Loyolas early years. The work closes with a rhythmic ostinato based on the words "Fight, fight, fight, ye men of the South!" The composer is a graduate of Loyola and received an honorary Doctor of Music degree in 2005.

In each of the four movements of this major work for concert band, the composer has tried to capture in music something of the spirit of this beautiful Swiss town of Rheinfelden, which lies on the banks of the Rhein. The opening movement, Promenade, sees woodwind and brass alternating short melodic fragments leading to a noble melody from the horns. The dreamy Ballad features a saxophone solo and chorale-like melody. This leads, via a four bar Interlude, to the Scherzo which takes the form of a moto perpetuo.

Band director and radio presenter Yutaka Nishida hails from Tokyo and has long been a friend of composer Philip Sparke. As well as conducting bands and teaching, he also presents a weekly two-hour music program, focusing on both brass and concertbands, on the Japanese national radio station, Digital Radio Musicbird.The program is called The Bandwagon and the radio station commissioned Philip Sparke to write a march which could be used as a theme tune for the program. The result is thisbright and breezy march in simple ABA form.

The inspiration for this three-part work goes back to the International European Youth Wind Music Festival, of which the patron has been Jacob de Haan several times. It begins in a festive march tempo, then sacred music, instrumental groups playing off_x005F_x001E_stage and a little march for brass and _x005F_x001D_flutes. The third movement is a parade in which the various sections of the ensemble head towards the stage from different directions. Even without the effective choreography of the musicians, Call of the Valley is an impressive concert band composition.
