And Still, the Spirit (Spirit of the Sequoia) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Mhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.Duration: 8:15

Gloria (Concert Band with opt. Choir - Score and Parts) - Rutter, John - Noble, Paul
Gloria is one of Rutter's most ambitious concert works, and its premiere was the occasion for his first visit to the US, in May, 1974. Rutter himself sees this work as analogous to a symphony, with three movements-- allegro vivace, andante, vivace e ritmico--i.e., fast, slow, fast, in common with symphonic practice, and, says Rutter, "exalted, devotional and jubilant by turns". As with many of Noble's arrangements of John Rutter's compositions, this work is written for combined Chorus and Concert Band, but may be performed by Concert Band alone.

Clouds (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sobiech, Zack - Bullock, Jack
Originally written by a strong young man with an incurable medical condition, this work provides a message that is clear and strong. Encourage your studnets to explore his lyrics to gain a greater understanding of the meaning. Although repetitive, the composition will serve as a tremendous introduction or reinforcement to alla breve time signature assisted by the teaching ideas that are shared in the preface to the conductor's score. This heartwarming composition will be one that many will never forget.Duration: 3.30

The Heart's Cry (from Riverdance) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Whelan, Bill - O'Loughlin, Sean
The music and spectacle of Bill Whelan's Riverdance forever changed how we look at Celtic music. The Heart's Cry is one of the most magical and lush ballads from the production, beautifully scored here for winds by Sean O'Loughlin. The opening solo flute statement is answered by the ensemble in chorale style with the distinctive and close harmonies of the original.

Purple Whispers (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Saucedo, Richard L.
This remarkable and descriptive work opens and closes with members of the ensemble whispering to one another, creating a soft yet chaotic effect. The simple poem is by the composer: Whispers move in coloured flight, seeking signs of next twilight, purple as the violets grow, warm but rich for all to know. As the piece progresses, introduced by a solo piano, the listener is taken through a dynamic range of emotional tension and release before the quiet mood returns to close out this uniquely effective composition.Duration: 5:15

Song of Hope (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
2011 was a disastrous year for Japan: on March 11 the northeast of the country suffered a violent earthquake, which triggered a huge tsunami and caused massive damage to people and the environment. The ensuing problems with the nuclear reactor at Fukushima only increased the misery: a black day in the country's history... One almost inevitable consequence of such dramatic circumstances is the particular damage suffered by the cultural arts. And so it was in Japan: various high school wind orchestras in the effected areas lost their practice rooms and/or instruments. It will take a long time before the damage suffered is repaired - and it will take great effort to overcome the psychological effects, too. Focusing on the latter, Yutada Nishida (director of The Bandwagon radio program) asked a few composers for a simple work that could be played by many orchestras. It just so happened that the Osakan Philharmonic Winds (with whom Jan Van der Roost had conducted a concert exclusively of his own works on September 25th) had had a similar idea. This concert saw the baptism of Song of Hope. This piece immediately struck a chord with musicians and audience alike: it begins bleakly in the low register and evolves to a more open, optimistic close. There really is hope for better times!Duration: 4:45
