George Washington and the Continental Armys withdrawal from Philadelphia to Valley Forge was one of the darkest chapters of the Revolutionary War. The demoralized mood of the troops is conveyed by the Revolutionary-era hymn Chester in a minor setting. A tempo change ushers in a new spirit as the Continental Army perseveres through the harsh winter and becomes a hardened fighting force. Finally, Chester is triumphantly presented in a major key as the now-formidable army emerges, ready to take up the fight and secure Americas independence.

Nikola Tesla was one of historys greatest inventors. Teslas Dream begins with a soft, contemplative flute solo, backed by gentle mallet percussion as though we are witness to his "lucid dreaming," which he believed was the source of his most creative ideas. This theme is repeated, growing to a full ensemble impact which represents the moment of creation and inspiration coming to fruition. The music then becomes faster, with strong Eastern European overtones that reflect his Serbian heritage. The initial tranquil flute melody gradually transforms into a frenetic dance, symbolizing Teslas many wide-swinging moods and colorful eccentricities.

This intense and volatile piece lights the fuse with a one-bar introduction that leads to and ignites the impact of the full band. A unifying four-note motif makes several expanded appearances. A brief period of calm is underpinned by a series of pulsating ostinati which maintain a constant state of agitation. In the explosive conclusion, the percussion section provides the last word with one final detonation.

A Finnish Rhapsody - Clare Grundman
The opening measured of Clare Grundman's A Finnish Rhapsody are base on Oi kallis Suomenmaa (O Blessed Fatherland), an old South Bothnian melody beloved of the whole Finnish nation. The words of this song epitomize each Finn'snoblest duty, the readiness to sacrifice all in defense of his country's liberty. Next is an episode based on Kesilta (Summer Evening), one of the loveliest of Finnish folk songs, being as delightfully tranquil as the Finnishcountryside. Following this is a section based on the lively folk tune, Talon Tytt (The Country Lass), a mirthful love song about a peasant maid and her swain. This leads into the majestic Finlandia Hymn, created by Jan Sibelius.The work closes with the return of Oh, Blessed Fatherland, with all its strength and grandeur. (5:30)
