This programmatic piece of music is one of the best-selling works from Otto M. Schwarz. There was a very high demand for a lower grade version to enable young and small bands to perform this epic piece. On September 19th, 1991, a mummified corpse of a man was found at the Similaun glacier in the -tztler Alps. The glacier unveiled an early man after 5300 years, with all of his personal belongings. His clothes and weapons were fairly well preserved and provide us today with a deeper insight into that period. Austrian nature filmmaker Kurt Mndel reconstructed the life of this man and made a film, which Otto M. Schwarz used as an opportunity to write a work for symphonic windband and musically resurrect the "Man in the Ice- -tzi".

There are challenges in use of dynamics, articulation, intensity and gradually increasing tempo. Dissonances are present several places, but the voice leading is diatonic and often in repeating patterns. The whole piece is based on one single scale: Bb major scale with augmented fourth and minor seventh. It is notated as a concert Bb major scale with two accidentals. This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Mhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.

The Unknown Journey was commissioned by Kwansei Gakuin University Symphony Band which was established in 1954 and has grown to become one of the top college bands in Japan. The composer chose the title as the piece seemed to create its ownmomentum as it developed, starting slowly and continuously increasing the tempo. Towards the end it gradually transmogrifies into the closing bars of Ravel's La Valse, a piece which perfectly characterises the idea of unstoppable momentum.

The Red Planet is an original concert piece in 5/4 time for a band with at least one year's training. Joseph Compello's intriguing new work depicts the planet Mars in 5/4 time, giving the work an uneven, exciting feel. The opening section is bold and aggressive, and this piece explores a variety of moods throughout its duration.
