The TV Detectives brings together five of Nigel Hess's best-known television themes (Dangerfield, Campion, Wycliffe, Maigret and Hetty Wainthropp Investigates), all originally written for small-screen sleuths in whodunits that have been enjoyed by TV audiences worldwide.Dangerfield is a BBC series about a Warwickshire police surgeon, and originally starred Nigel le Vaillant, before Nigel Havers took over the lead role. Campion, also from the BBC, was based on Margery Allingham's stories of a mild-mannered 1920s gentleman detective, played by Peter Davison. Wycliffe was a long-running HTV series set in Cornwall and starred Jack Shepherd as a somewhat dour and low-key DCI - but, of course, he always solved the case! Michael Gambon starred in Granada TV's latest incarnation of the famous French detective Maigret, while Patricia Routledge played the OAP sleuth to perfection in Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, another popular BBC series. ivind Westby has written a number of excellent but demanding instrumental arrangements for Concert Band. In the present one, he has transcribed five of the most famous by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-1994) grew up near Ipanema, the famous beach in Rio de Janeiro. His big break through and most creative period came in the 50's and 60's which gave him the status as the greatest Brazilian composer of all times. Together with Stan Getz and Jo�o and Astrud Gilberto he recorded one of the best selling jazz-albums of all times, an album which feature several of his most famous compositions. His inspiration includes another Brazilian great; Pixinguinha, but also classical composers like Frederick Chopin and Claude Debussy. He died in NYC in 1994 after composing approx. 400 works. He is recognized all over the world as one of the most influential composers of the 20th century.

The English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (1948) has been able to produce one world success after another over the past five decades. The controversial musical and film Jesus Christ Superstar (1971) was followed by Evita (1976), Cats (1981), Song and Dance (1982), a combination of Variations and Tell me on a Sunday, Starlight Express (1984) and Requiem (1985). His Phantom of the Opera premiered in 1986 starring Sarah Brightman (Lloyd Webber's former wife) and Michael Crawford. The musical won both the Laurence Olivier Award and the Evening Standard Drama Award for Best Musical of 1986.

In 1934, the city of Melbourne celebrated its centenary and marked the occasion with the MacRobertson International Air Race. KLM's entry was its first DC-2, PH-AJU 'Uiver' (Stork), which took off on 20 October 1934. Shortly before the finish, the plane had to make an emergency landing due to poor weather conditions. The following morning, the entire town turned out to dig the aircraft out of the mud, enabling to resume its flight. Nonetheless, the distance was covered in three days, 18 hours and 17 minutes: a winning performance! This programmatic piece tells the story describing the start of the engines in bar one, the flight over the clouds, the thunderstorm, theemergency landing and many more scenes!
