The Black River Overture was commissioned by the music society Pfarrkapelle Schwarzenbach, on the occasion of its 50th anniversary. Schwarzenbach literally means "black brook" - hence the title of the work. This light-hearted piece is a compliment to all music societies and wind bands that have continued despite alternative, modern leisure-time activities in villages; as such, they are able to offer a wonderful and meaningful occupation to both the young and young-at-heart: namely, making music! The Continental Overture was commissioned by the California Band Directors Association [CBDA] and was premiered on February 23rd 1997 at the 40th annual CBDA Conference in Bakersfield [CA] by the California All State Symphonic Band, conducted by the composer. It is a short, dynamic work full of energy and spirit, with a melodic middle section and a spectacular ending. The composer does not try to hide his continental roots: several influences by some of the great European composers can be recognised.

£164.99Overture for a Special Occasion - Philip Sparke
The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Sckingen. Since Bad Sckingen is known as the 'Trompeterstadt', or trumpeter city, Sparke's creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel's poem, Der Trompeter von Sckingen (The Trumpeter from Sckingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city's famous resident.

Doesn?t everyone get butterflies in the stomach every now and then? Every person has known moments of being in love. Accordingly, in Butterfly Overture a charming love theme has been employed, which is introduced by the alto saxophone in the slow middle passage. Additionally, the butterfly is a cheerful flutterer that never moves in a straight line but always with an unexpected motion. In the Vivace the flute initially performs the fluttering theme, after which it has been instrumented in diverse variations throughout the entire band. A wonderful new addition to the Concert Band repertoire that will be a firm favourite for many years.
