£71.50Quail Creek Overture - David Gorham
This selection was commissioned by the Central Oklahoma Band Directors Association for the CODA Ninth Grade Honor Band. After an energetic opening, a lyrical legato section is introduced by a woodwind choir and answered by a brass choir before returning to the original excitement of the opening section. A beautiful slower section in 3/4 time follows before the opening section returns, taking the piece to a strong, bold ending.

£110.99Overture for Woodwinds - Philip Sparke
This work was commissioned for The Berkshire Young Musicians Trust (England), who required a testing piece for the woodwind section of their concert band. The piece opens with a strong unison passage based on the interval of a fifth and develops with a passionate legato. This is followed by the main vivo section of the work based on the earlier 'fifth' figures. A bridge passage leads to a short chorale figure and a rhythmic climax which dissolves into a plaintive solo for oboe over staccato clarinets. Following a recapitulation of the main theme the oboe returns triumphantly before the opening unison passage reappears to provide a stirring coda.

The allegro vivo opening features dynamic rhythmic figures that pyramid throughout the band leading to a delicate and lyrical middle section. The close is a repeat of the opening figures that drive to a breathtaking finish. An excellent piece with appeal for both performer and audience.

A mysterious introduction begins this exciting concert favorite expertly adapted for young band. After a short solo clarinet passage, the music takes off in cut time. Exciting brass chords and woodwind runs give way to a tender contrasting section. Brass fanfares bring the rousing conclusion that features a chorale and a blazing finish. This adaptation is a real audience pleaser and will work well as an opener or closer.

Here is an exciting composition full of the multi-rhythms combined with the Smith harmonies that make his works unique. Following a jubilant introduction, the saxophones set the melodic line, which is augmented by the full band. Brass pyramids lead into a slow lyrical section with French Horn backgrounds. A modulation follows leading into a recap of the opening theme. The driving percussion pattern is soon augmented by more instruments building to a dramatic finale.
