Bandanna Overture - Daron Aric Hagen
Bandanna is the extraordinary opera commissioned by a consortium of 79 members of the College Band Directors National Association, and premiered at the CBDNA convention in Austin, TX on February 28, 1999. This overture is not a part of the opera, but an independent concert work created by the composer for concert performance. A brilliantly scored composition, that has already been adopted by the Texas UIL Prescribed Music List, Overture to "Bandanna" features many musical ideas from the opera including the wonderful melody that brings audiences to their feet. The composition opens with a powerful rhythmic motif, which soon develops into the main theme of this brisk overture. The unwavering, joyful melodies and a positive atmosphere give the work a high-spirited energy. The strong pulse has the music firmly in its grasp and only quietens gradually in a pensive middle movement that seems to emanate from another world. This atmospheric passage can evoke dreamy thoughts and a variety of visions. But then the liveliness of the previous motifs returns, to take us back to the vivacious here and now, full of optimism and determination for the hundred years to come. On to a wonderful future! To celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten in Innsbruck Philip Sparke composed Wilten Festival Overture. A bold fanfare, led by the horns, forms the opening of the work from which an expressive theme unfolds until the full band reaches a climax. Short solo statements from saxophone, horn and trumpet lead to a recapitulation of this theme which melts into a rhythmic Vivo. A robust melody is is then played by the clarinets and taken up by the whole band before a legato figure leads to a cantabile theme, again presented by the clarinets. The original Vivo melody reappears before the opening fanfare is briefly heard and the work comes to an end with a short Coda. A great experience for the whole band!Duration: 8:00

Austrian Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts)
Austria is an industrious country. During the last century--which was characterized by extreme changes--the hard-working and ambitious people achieved a great deal, enduring two world wars and numerous political skirmishes. Despite all the problems involved in a change from a dual monarchy to a small state, Austria has found its independence. With his Austrian Overture, Thomas Doss looks toward the future. The first part of the composition provides an optimistic outlook; along with the happiness and energy, some musical humor is also present: while the horns powerfully express joy, small yodeling melodies sound throughout. As the rhythm continues in search of new ways to go, catchy tunes compete to be heard. However, in addition to the energetic, diligent Austria, there's also the quiet landscape where one can enjoy repose and beauty. These aspects - as well as the freedom of spirit and cultural life -are conveyed in the second part of the work through the surprising linking of chords, romantic phrasing, and tender melodies. This exciting overture opens with a fanfare section that emphasizes the brass and is active rhythmically as well as harmonically. A strong, full sound will result from the richly scored chromatic parallel triads. For musicalcontrast, the middle section is quasi-rubato and very lyrical, relying mainly on the woodwinds with low brass added later. The transition back to the original rhythmic fanfare is smoothly written and effectively brings the work toa close. This overture is a fine choice for concert, contest and festival. (Grade 3)
