Reminiscencia Gitana - André Waignein
Reminiscencia Gitana was originally a piano piece. Andr Waignein wrote the piece for the Spanish pianist Blanca Quevedo, a student of his at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels. This work has all the elements that make a composition interesting: melody, virtuosity and most importantly the 'Gitana' (gypsy) character. Each section follows on without interruption making a contrasting whole that will captivate both players and audience until the last note.

Maurice Ravel was only 24 when his piano solo 'Pavane Pour une Infante Defunte,' which translated means Pavane for a dead princess, became the rage of the drawing rooms and salons of Paris in 1899, but the work already held theunmistakable stamp of his style. Ravel orchestrated the work in 1910. Jerry Brubaker presents this lovely work in a Concert band setting with all of the lush melodies and harmonies of the original work but with simplified rangesand a comfortable key. A marvelous choice for a truly beautiful piece of impressionistic literature!

Requiem Aeternam - Giacomo Puccini
Giacomo Puccini was commissioned to write a second opera after the resounding success of his first, Le Villi. However, the original four-act, grand opera Edgar, to a libretto by Ferdinando Fontana, received a rather lukewarm reception at its premire in La Scala in Milan in 1889 - initially, the work was only performed three times. Of all the planned performances in the subsequent two years, only one took place, in Lucca, Puccini's birthplace. There, the work was well received. Nevertheless, the composer decided to make drastic changes to Edgar the most radical being the reduction of the opera to three acts, as well as altering a few arias, charactersand instrumental parts. In its revised form, the work was even less popular than before. The discarded fourth act later provided material for Tosca (the duet Amoro sol' per te), but Puccini never felt the need to defend Edgar - as he did other less fortunate operas, such as La Rondine and Suor Angelica. On a piano excerpt for his female friend Sybil Seligman he even corrupted the title to 'E Dio ti GuARda da quest' opera' (may God preserve you from this opera). This did not prevent Arturo Toscanini performing the Requiem from the third act at Puccini's funeral in Milan Cathedral on 3 December 1924. The Requiem in the third act is being played when the long funeral procession carries the alleged body of Edgar - the confusedyoung man hesitating between the love of the virtuous Fidelia and the exotic Tigrana. The mass hails Edgar as a hero, but a monk claims that he has betrayed his country for a few gold pieces. When the soldiers try to desecrate the body, they discover that the armor contains none. The monk reveals himself as Edgar. He wants to leave with his faithful Fidelia, but the vengeful Tigrana stabs him and kills Fidelia. Edgar grieves over the lifeless body of his beloved, while Tigrana is arrested and the people submerge into prayer.

Euphonium Concerto II - Philip Sparke
The original concept for this work was a suite of short movements, each with its own character, but by the time the first movement was complete it was clear that a conventional three-movement format was going to work out better. The opening movement contains much syncopation and is almost rag-like in style. The slower second movement explores the unsurpassable ability of the euphonium to play lyrically, with a theme that is later taken up by the band whilst the soloist weaves a filigree descant. This leads straight into the third movement, which is almost bebop in style and shows off the jazzier capabilities of the euphonium. The concerto was composed for the virtuoso soloist,Steven Mead. A version for euphonium and piano is also available.

Viva Espania - Larry Neeck
A delightful combination of lyrical themes with rhythmic exuberance and folk-like melodies. "Viva Espania" is based on themes by two 19th-century Spanish composers. The opening theme is from "Recuerdos de la Alhambra" by Francisco Tarrega. That piece is a traditional Spanish waltz and was inspired by the famous Alhambra Castle in Grenada. The second theme is by Isaac Albeniz from a suite of music for the piano, "Songs of Spain", entitled "Leyenda". This section, while still in 3/4 has a fiery exuberance much like one would expect from a flamenco guitarist, yet it's very playable by young players. Authentic Spanish music that's a terrific addition to any concert performance!
