    Dance of Uzume - Piet Swerts

    Dance of Uzume is a concertino that is based on a Japanese myth: out of anger toward her brother Susanowa, the storm god, the sun goddess Amaterasu hides in a cave. The goddess of joy, Uzume, succeeds in luring the sun goddess out of the cave by dancing wildly. The joy and laughter of the other gods as they watch Uzume arouses Amaterasu's curiosity and with her appearance, the light on earth returns.     A fanfare introduces This festive march is introduced by a lively fanfare which leads into the first, playful, melodic line which features a regular dynamic alternation and a light syncopated rhythm.     School's Cool - Jacob de Haan

    This short, "cool" suite in three movements can be performed with a variety of instruments from a handful of players to a complete concert band. The first movement radiates joy with a powerful 3/4 beat. The second movement is in the style of a pavane, which gives a sense of nostalgia and the final movement forms a cheerful and high-spirited closing with a really funky beat.     The Ecstasy of Gold is the famous theme from the movie The Good, The Bad and The Ugly that leads up to and is heard during the movie's climax, the showdown! The complete soundtrack to The Good, the Bad and the Ugly was released in 1966 and sold millions of copies. Since 1983, heavy-metal band Metallica have been opening concerts with Morricone's dramatic and exciting song, The Ecstasy of Gold.     March of the Trolls - Edvard Grieg / arr. Brian Beck

    Edvard Grieg (1843--1907) is best known for his eternally popular Piano Concerto in A Minor, as well as more than 150 songs and 66 lyric pieces. is from his Lyric Pieces, Op. 54. Trolls are a constant theme in Norwegian folklore and can be viewed as the equivalent of our "boogie man." Far to the north in Norway where the winter storms whip the weather-beaten coasts, you will find dark forests with moonlit lakes, deep fjords surrounded by mighty snowcapped mountains, and long rivers and cold streams cascading down the mountain sides. This is where you might find the irritable, short-tempered trolls coming out of their hiding places after sunset, marching to wreck havoc on unsuspecting Norwegian households.
