For Heaven and the Future (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

The title of this expansive work from Samuel Hazo draws inspiration from a Robert Frost poem, and the thematic material is a creative interpretation of the English folk song Seventeen Come Sunday. Differing from Vaughan Williams' treatment of the same tune in English Folk Song Suite, this setting remains at a slow tempo throughout and undergoes a myriad of changes through use of harmonic and textural variations. Beautifully and effectively paced with key impact points at just the right moments.Duration: 5:00

Their Blossoms Down (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

This piece is meant to take on a lush Irish feel, as this best compares to Father McAnulty's (former President of Duquesne University in Pittsburgh) gentle nature. The poem is from an old Irish blessing.

Echoes (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

Resonant chimes and sonorous chorales lend a somber but inspiring hue to this work, written to memorialize a band director's passing while celebrating the legacy that all teachers leave for their students. A Zillion Nickles (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

When you look out at the ocean, what does it resemble? This unique, driving composition paints that picture. The upper Atlantic beaches hold many stories, from beautifully scenic sunrises to the wrath of Hurricane Sandy. Three high schools in Toms River, New Jersey commissioned the musical depiction of their celebrated shore, from joy to turbulence. The heavy emphasis on percussion only adds to the exciting build and powerful ending.Duration: 4:15

From Gold (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

Glistening chords, soaring melodies, broad fanfares and gorgeous chorales will fill your concert hall with this evocative work. Best of all, From Gold sounds much harder than it actually is. Mr. Hazo's background as a music educator is evident in how quickly directors and students will get to the music making. Written entirely in B-flat with few accidentals, the runs are split between instruments for playability, and parts are doubled/cued to build confidence. Young bands will sound mature, and mature bands will be breathtaking.Duration: 4:30

Ride (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

Ride is a high-velocity piece inspired by a landscape-blurring car ride down a country road in Pennsylvania. Beginning and ending in the same key to symbolize going from one "home" to another, Ride zooms through harmonic and metric changes in between to take listeners and musicians for a "ride" before building to a furious climax. Arrows (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

This impressive work by Samuel Hazo begins and ends with a unifying dramatic and powerful fanfare theme. In contrast, the middle section is built around faster and modern-sounding rhythms and harmonies, while incorporating traditional melodies (including a hint of Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring) lending a unique and timeless quality to the music. Commissioned as a tribute from one band director to his predecessor, this is a rewarding and effective work for today's bands.Duration: 5:00

Drums of the Saamis (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hazo, Samuel R.

Drums of the Saamis was commissioned by the Medicine Hat Concert Band Society of Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada. The piece chronicles the merger of the First Nation (first natives) and modern Albertan cultures. The opening tribal drums followed by the haunting melody simulating the traditional wooden flute comprise two themes that are the foundation for the entire piece. Both elements are developed, varied and enhanced throughout as the listener senses the increasing influence of modern day Alberta through the use of modern sounding chords and rhythms. By the end, the marriage of the old and the new is complete. This powerful work closes as it began; a restatement of themes representing the musical and historical foundation of the region.Duration: 5:00
