Harlequin is the most popular of the comic servant characters from the Italian commedia dell'arte who, although a slow thinker, was acrobatic and nimble - he would never perform a simple action when the addition of a cartwheel or backflip would spice up the movement! These characteristics are aptly portrayed musically in Bruce Broughton's mini concert overture. Originally published for brass band in 1984, this revised version for wind band coveys all the hustle, bustle, and agility of the character in a finely crafted musical structure. The Maalbeek has its source in Relegem, a municipality of Asse, and after 12.6 km flows into the Brussels-Rupel Canal at the 'Verbrande Brug' of Grimbergen. It originates from seepage water, groundwater that comes to the surface under pressure. Via the 'Sprietmolen', it runs along the 'Nekkerbos' to Grimbergen, where there are four more mills. The 's Gravenmolen, the Liermolen, the Tommenmolen and the Oyenbrugmolen.

Les oiseaux dans la charmille (CB) - Jacques Offenbach - Bert Van Thienen
One of the most difficult coloratura arias in the entire operatic repertoire, "Les oiseaux dans la charmille" comes from Offenbach's 'Les contes d'Hoffmann'. The piece is also known as 'The Doll Song' since the character who performs it, Olympia, is a mechanical doll. In the opera, Hoffman recounts how he was charmed by the automaton, co-created by Spalanzani and Copplius. Though anyone could plainly see that Olympia was a machine, Copplius sold Hoffman a pair of magical glasses that tricked him into thinking Olympia was a real woman.
