Summer (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
Summer is the second in a series of symphonic poems, inspired by the seasons and the folk music of Scandinavia. In Spring, the composer made use of two Swedish folk tunes, whereas Summer focuses on Finnish folk music. The work opens with an impression of the pastoral landscape of Ostrobothnia, an elongated area on the west coast of Finland. As in Spring, the music continues with a polka, based on the opening bars of Suomis Sang (Song of Finland). After a brief horn interlude, a saxophone quartet plays from behind the stage Ant han dansa med mej (Ant was dancing with me), while the orchestra starts up an ostinato bass line that marks the transition to the finale. A gradual build-up to the 'Sun Theme' from Spring results in a radiant conclusion, with a short quotation from the first Symphony of Jean Sibelius, Finland's musical icon.Duration: 11:30

Ave Maria, an excerpt from the Missa Solemnis, was written by Andr Waignein at the request of the Aosta Valley Regional Council, in Italy. Missa Solemnis contains all the musical parts that are used to accompany liturgical rites. However, the composer was keen to include an Ave Maria in memory of his mother, who was a very religious person and especially revered the Virgin Mary.This Ave Maria reveals a shimmering melody with very discreet orchestral support that allows the vocal or instrumental soloist to express their emotions through exceedingly generous musical phrases. The Amsterdam Suite, written in 1995 and first performed by the Slaithwaite Philharmonic Orchestra the following year, seeks to convey some impressions of a city I have visited several times. It opens with the waltz sequence, Barrel Organs, recalling the hurdy-gurdies positioned at strategic points in the city with the aim of parting tourists with their loose change. The tunes, however, are mine rather than an attempt to reproduce the real thing. Amsterdam takes its Saturday nights seriously, with the result that those who get up (or are still up) early on Sunday morning will find themselves in eerily deserted streets, whose atmosphere to me suggests one instrument above all, the saxophone, which plays a prominent part in Lonely City. The Saturday nights themselves are depicted in Trams and Crowds. I have taken liberties with the chronology for the obvious musical reason of wanting to go out with a bang rather than a whimper. The basic structure is very much that used by Eric Coates for similar piece, a bustling outer section with a quick march trio, presented in a fuller and more embellished orchestration on each of its three appearances. - Matthew Curtis.
