A Touch of Klez! - Jan de Haan

A Touch of Klez! was written for flute or alto saxophone solo and concert band. The work is based on three klezmer melodies: 'Ani Purim', 'Shlof Mayn Kind' and 'Freilachs Fun L.A.'. Klezmer is a form of traditional Yiddish music that originated in Eastern Europe during the Late Middle Ages and was originally intended as music for weddings. In the 20th century, klezmer melodies in Europe were influenced by other music styles; in America, jazz had a notable influence on this compelling music.

    Prelude Festivo - John Brakstad

Prelude Festivo is intended to be performed in concerts and in competitions as well. The work includes solo passages for most instrument groups. Duration 7 minutes. Form: Fast slow fast. The piece is built around two themes. Theme 1 (Allegro con spirito) is the first one presented as a clarinet solo after a fanfare-like opening. This theme is developed and also appears as melodic and rhytmic fragments throughout the composition. In the concluding section (bar 196) both themes are played in conjunction before the piece concludes with the fanfare theme from theopening bars. The solos for cornet and euphonium may be played by saxophone soli cued in at bars 114 and 128. Parts that are marked piu mosso ed leggiero should be played in a cheerful light staccato style in contrast to Andante cantabile.

    Citadel - James Barnes

Citadel was composed to commemorate the 150th anniversary of The University of Kansas (1865 to 2015.) It begins with optional offstage chimes (one or two sets [opt.]) to depict the daily ringing of the bells in KU's World War II Memorial Campanile. Trumpets introduce a fanfare-like figure that quickly evolves into the opening theme of the work. As the music settles and becomes softer, a saxophone choir introduces a slower, more pensive middle theme intended to describe the university's academic nature. A quiet moment at the end of this section hints at the famous Rock Chalk Chant in solo horn before the chimes and fanfare return to end the work in a final, dramatic outburst of sound and color.
