The Hida High School is in a highland city called Takayama in Gifu Prefecture. Takayama City has some of the highest mountains in Japan, atmospheric rows of houses and streets, and a beautiful landscape. The magnificent views from these mountains can be described as a paradise above the clouds. When the composer visited there in the summer of 2001, the lovely flowers spreading through the valley and the refreshing air welcomed him. The flowers looked as if they were fashionably dressed and fully enjoying conversation and a short summer at a reunion party. The composer was inspired by this scenery to compose this piece. The musical party opens with happy greetings of a reunion andjoyful themes follow one after another. A light xylophone solo, a waltz and an adagio featuring alternate solos by alto saxophone, euphonium and trumpet lead to a brilliant finale featuring brass and percussion played in irregular time. A beautiful musical picture that your band will enjoy performing for many years.

Doesn?t everyone get butterflies in the stomach every now and then? Every person has known moments of being in love. Accordingly, in Butterfly Overture a charming love theme has been employed, which is introduced by the alto saxophone in the slow middle passage. Additionally, the butterfly is a cheerful flutterer that never moves in a straight line but always with an unexpected motion. In the Vivace the flute initially performs the fluttering theme, after which it has been instrumented in diverse variations throughout the entire band. A wonderful new addition to the Concert Band repertoire that will be a firm favourite for many years.

The Butterfly That Stamped - Maxime Aulio
The Butterfly that Stamped is a story from the anthology Just So Stories, written by Rudyard Kipling for his daughter who suffered constant bad health. The book inspired composer Maxim Aulio to compose this work which is in a French impressionistic style. The piece opens with a beautiful palace surrounded by the impressive gardens of King Solomon. It is in these gardens that the baritone saxophone makes its appearance representing King Solomon himself, the flute representing the butterfly couple, the clarinet representing Queen Balkis and the trumpet the djin.

Vocalise is the second movement from Satoshi Yagisawa's Trombone Concerto. Yagisawa finally decided to publish this movement as a separate piece, since it has been frequently performed independently and on the euphonium, tenor saxophone or the trombone. The Trattamars (Tratta March) was originally written for 'Il trattamento miracolo', an ensemble of five, performing light-hearted musical acts for the young and the old. This march is played when the members of the group appear on stage. The Dutch composer of the march, Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden, studied classical saxophone as well as band conducting and composition at the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg. He is a baritone saxophonist with the Orkest van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Band of the Royal Netherlands Air force). He is also active as a freelance conductor and composer.

Intermezzo is the second movement of Satoshi Yagisawa's Clarinet Concerto. The concerto was first performed by Higashi-Hiroshima Wind Ensemble in Hiroshima, Japan in 2010 with guest performer Shinsuke Hashimoto, clarinettist with the Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra and was conducted by Atsushi Kageyama. Inspiration for this work came from the fact that both Satoshi Yagisawa and Shinsuke Hashimoto graduated from Musashino Academia Musicae.Clarinet Concerto>/I> is the pinnacle of Satoshi Yagisawa's "Concerto Series" which also features his Suite Concertante for Piano and WindOrchestra, Trumpet Concerto, Trombone Concerto, Saxophone Concertino, andConcertino for Solo Percussion and Wind Orchestra.Yagisawa's characteristic heartfelt theme in the second movement is especially popular and consequently--entitled Intermezzo--it is often performed independently.Soloist: Grade 4
