£58.50Starlight Memories - Darren W. Jenkins
Starlight Memories was commissioned by and written for the Olathe Civic Band in Olathe, Kansas. It was dedicated to the memory of Ed Badsky, who resurrected the group from a 50 year absence in the mid 1980's. Mr. Badsky was a pillar of the Olathe Band community. He was instrumental in starting Olathe's Band program from its beginnings in the 1960's to what is now a thriving and vibrant program that a proud and supportive community enjoys. Mr. Badsky was also a prominent jazz saxophonist who performed in the Kansas City area on a regular basis during his career. The work itself is meant to reflect and celebrate this man's life and accomplishments. It contains two short alto saxophone solos and its harmonies are "jazz" influenced. The work's title is based upon a local theater at which Mr. Badsky frequently performed.

The fifth movement of Leroy Anderson's The Irish Suite, "The Last Rose of Summer," has never been transcribed for concert band. Skillfully scored by Douglas Wagner in Anderson's charismatic characteristic style, this work features an emotional alto saxophone solo in place of the orchestra version's violin solo. This dramatic work is performable as a stand-alone work or in tandem with the rest of the movements. All movements are now available: I. "The Irish Washerwoman" [00-83181], II. "The Minstrel Boy" [00-32547], III. "The Rakes of Mallow" [00-30836], IV. "The Wearing of the Green" [00-30835], V. "The Last Rose of Summer" [00-32545] and VI. "The Girl I Left Behind" [00-32546].

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem and tells of the events that befall the Greek hero Odysseus on his long journey after the fall of Troy. This feeling of adventure and mystery has been captured in this original work set in three movements. This piece was written in 2007 but now features some advanced parts for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, and trumpet. These parts add range, technique, and control that is at the grade 3 level. This offers the opportunity for more advanced players to play these parts with more flourishes while the majority of the band can play at a grade 1.5 level.

Two contrasting movements provide ample opportunity for each section to shine in this tasteful work by Steve Hodges. The sensitive first movement features optional solos by the saxophone and clarinet. Following a soaring presentation by the full band, the soloist entwine in a duet to end the movement in a peaceful, reverent manner. The second movement begins with a strong bass introduction before settling into a vibrant, "alla breve" march. is ideally suited for the developing young band. A real winner!
