Battles (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Dobson, Simon

Battles was written for the restoration of the epic 1927 silent film The Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands, and was commissioned by the British Film Institute (BFI) in 2013. The work presents eight contrasting scenes as a continuous sequence: War, Introduction of Admiral von Spee, German Banquet, Building Steam/Preparing, Islanders, Call to Arms, Great Battle at Sea and Victory. The original score was written for a small chamber orchestra, symphonic brass and a substantial batterie of tuned and untuned percussion. Battles has been edited for symphonic wind orchestra with percussion and harp. Composer Simon Dobson says of his colourful score, "I wanted to keep things simple and clear, so there is a British theme, a fanfare march idea, often heard on trumpet, and a German naval theme, which is a more angular motif." See You! (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

See You! is a little farewell song. Farewell scenes are a prominent part of the most touching elements of film music. Just think of the soundtrack to the great film Casablanca, which became famous overnight. See You! is not intended to be a permanent good-bye but more a 'see you soon'. It has been especially composed for young bands or smaller ensembles who want to try a more modern style of band music.Duration: 3:45

Godzilla Eats Las Vegas (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Whitacre, Eric

Note from Composer:It took me seven years to get my bachelor's degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. By the time I graduated I was ready to eat Las Vegas.Tom Leslie asked me to write another piece for the group as I was leaving, and I thought it would be a blast to do something completely ridiculous. The players are called upon to scream in terror, dress like Elvises (Elvi), and play in about thirty different styles from mambo to cheesy lounge music. The audience follows a script that I wrote simulating a campy, over the top Godzilla movie (is there any other kind?).I wrote the bulk of the piece while in my first year at Juilliard, and no kidding, I used to act out the script every morning devouring animal crackers, wreaking havoc all over the breakfast table. The script was originally twice as long, and had an entire subplot devoted to a young scientist and his love interest. As I started to finish the piece, however, it didn't seem that funny and that story (along with an extended Elvis tribute) ended up on the cutting room floor. The idea that this piece is being played all over the world in such serious concert venues is the single funniest thing I have ever heard. It has been played on the steps of the Capitol by the United States Marine Band, by the Scottish National Wind Symphony (they play in kilts, so help me God), and I have a video of a Japanese audience visibly confused and shaken by the whole experience. Can you imagine? I'm laughing my head off even as I write this!Godzilla Eats Las Vegas! was commissioned by the University of Nevada Las Vegas, Thomas G. Leslie, conductor, and received its premiere November 28th, 1996.The performers are encouraged to go crazy: wear showgirl costumes, Elvis costumes, act out scenes on stage, use video and lighting - anything to get a laugh.

La Storia (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

Film music is usually written to match the action of each scene. In Jacob de Haan's piece La Storia however there are no scenes and no plot, yet the composer supplies us with music full of action and suspense. The performers and audience are left to create their own storyline to fit the music. Jacob de Haan has dedicated La Storia to one of the most famous composers of film music - the Italian, Ennio Morricone.Duration: 7:15

    Annandale Chronicles

A dynamic new programmatic work which depicts events and scenes from the history and folklore of Annandale, Minnesota. Events depicted include the "Great Train Wreck of 1922" and a visit to Al Capone's hideout on nearby "Bungalow Island". The music features solos for horn and trumpet and every section of the band get lots of chances to shine. There are many percussion parts which will keep even the largest percussion section interested and involved. An impressive composition that is a terrific choice for any concert or contest performance.

KARMAN LINE, The (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Meechan, Peter

Extra Score. This work takes inspiration from photos taken at the Karman Line (an invisible line 100 kilometres above sea level and is the boundary where the atmosphere of Earth ends, and outer space begins). It portrays the vastness of Space, the mechanics of Space (including shuttles and astronauts), as well as stunning views of the Earth. The main thematic material for the piece is modal, and is developed from key pitches and intervals that define the character and nature of the mixolydian mode. These are gradually introducted as accented notes over the opening ostinato. This modal music is gradually juxtaposed with a more conventional minor scale originally creating conflict and tension, but eventually harmony between these two sound-worlds. Duration: 6'24" Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM 155D Scenes from Childhood.

    Scrimshaw Tales

Scrimshaw is the technique of whalebone and ivory carving that was started by sailors centuries ago. Inspired by the composer's stay in Utqiagvik, Alaska, this composition musically illustrates scenes from these carvings thatdepict a day of Alaskan fishing. Starting broadly and majestically, the music quickly moves to a lively and energetic section that features syncopation and introduces the concept of canonic entrances. A return to the initial thematic material brings the piece to an excitingconclusion. Although challenging in many ways, this composition fully rewards all performers and listeners with a thrilling musical journey.
