As the title implies, the work expresses the deep religious emotions of the promises made by God to mankind. Two thematic elements are employed: the first, a dramatic proclamation, is introduced by horns and subsequently taken bytrumpets and woodwinds - the second plaintive theme, in the manner of a supplication, is presented by oboes followed by flutes and clarinets. The first theme returns leading to a climactic section by the full ensemble. Adevelopment section focuses on fragments from the principal theme culminating in a brief brass fanfare based on the earlier accompanying motives. The recapitulation of the principal theme brings the work to a quiet and peacefulclose. (8:00)

American Folk Fantasy is a medley in overture style, which includes three well-known American folk songs. The first section utilizes 'Round Her Neck She Wears a Yellow Ribbon in an up-beat, march-like rendition. The second tune,All the Pretty Little Horses (Hushabye), provides a lyrical touch to the middle section. What follows is a stirring setting of the famous Shaker melody, Simple Gifts, which ultimately rushes to a grandiose conclusion. (4:45)

Composed toward the end of the Second World War, this music suggests the emotions of a soldier reading a letter from home. The music has been described as Copland's 'most sentimental' and reflects his own homesickness while visiting Mexico. The aria 'Kuda, kuda v udalilis' is sung by Lensky, fianc of Olga and friend of Onegin in the second act of Tschaikowsky's opera Eugene Onegin: Lensky challenged Onegin to a duel in response to Onegin's advances on Olga. Now, on the morning of the duel, Lensky looks back on his happy youth as he waits for Onegin to arrive. He realizes that he will probably die in the duel and that he does not particularly care if he does. The only great loss in his death would be that he would never see Olga again.
