Die Himmel ruhmen des Ewigen Ehre (The Heavens Extol the Glory of God) is the first line of the poem Die Ehre Gottes in der Natur, which was written by Christian Furchtegott Gellert (1715-1769). The music that Beethoven composed to the text, was published in 1803, as the fourth Lied (song) in a cycle of six (6 Lieder nach Gedichten von Gellert, opus 48). Maria Durch ein' Dornwald Ging (Blest Mary Wanders Through the Thorn) is a traditional German Christmas song. The earliest known version is recorded in the Andernacher Gesangbuch from 1608. Halfway through the nineteenth century it was a regional pilgrimage song in Thuringen, and at the beginning of the twentieth century, the current version was registered in the songbook Zupfgeigenhansl of the German youth movement. It was first published in 1905 and has subsequently become a favourite for Scots remembering their homeland when far away from home. The song, entitle "Voi che sapete" (Tell me fair ladies), is introduced in the opera as if written by Cherubino himself and is simply a diversion rather than of relevance to the plot. Although initial reaction to "The Marriage of Figaro" was somewhat lukewarm, it has of course established itself as one of the great comic operas, and this canzona became and 18th century "pop" song.

Instrumentation: Flute/Piccolo in E flat only, Horns in E flat only, No Tenor Sax) "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" is a British music hall song written by Jack Judge and co-credited to, but not co-written by, Henry James "Harry" Williams. It was allegedly written for a 5 shilling bet in Stalybridge on 30 January 1912 and performed the next night at the local music hall. Judge's parents were Irish, and his grandparents came from Tipperary. It became popular among soldiers in the First World War and is remembered as a song of that war.
