Majestic and awesome it soars over the elegant and peaceful Cathedral Close.Movement 3: Sarsen Stones - Stonehenge's vertical Sarsens weigh 20 tonnes and stand 7 metres tall, they are heavy!Movement 4: Moonrakers - From the 15th to the 18th century, there was much smuggling of illegal gin in Wiltshire. The story goes that a group that was trying to rake out barrels hidden in a village pond, and surprised by the Excisemen, feigned stupidity. They told the Excisemen they were trying to rake in the moon, reflected on the ponds surface. They were believed and left in peace! Dragon Fight (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

At the best viewpoint over the Alps of Liechtenstein, the village of Guflina is situated. Underneath the overhanging ledge, there is said to have been a cave in the mountain. In it lived a terrible dragon that was on the rampage on the surrounding meadows, spreading fear and terror among the population. At the same time there lived a giant man up in Guflina, who had the strength of twelve normal men. The farmers implored him to help them in their distress. The giant ventured to fight the dragon and was lying in wait above the cave. When the dragon refused to appear, the giant threw stones into the entrance of the cave. They got into a fight, which the giant only just won with difficulty. Since that day, people have lived in peace and prosperity.Duration: 7.15

Papyrus (Bearer of Wisdom) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Doss, Thomas

The history of paper ranges over more than five thousand years: likely starting around 3500 BC in old Egypt with the use of papyrus. The oldest findings of written paper date from 2700 BC. In China, the first production of paper took place in the year 105 AD. The Arabs acquired their knowledge of the art of making paper around 750 AD, thanks to Chinese prisoners of war. Around the same time, the Celtic Ogham script was created in Ireland and carved into stones or trees. In Europe, the first paper mill was not put into operation until the 12th century! No matter how different the production methods and its historical use, paper was always a way to pass on wisdom, art and knowledge. Even today, in the age of digitalisation, paper still has a somewhat 'sacred' image. With Papyrus, Thomas Doss has written a wonderful composition in which the history of paper is reflected, and listeners can very much hear the various periods of this history represented throughout the piece. Diamond Concerto (Euphonium Concerto No.3) (Euphonium Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Morschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein. The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead's special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career. The village of Morschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this it was decided to give the commission a local connection by choosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:Earth Star is rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.Ocean Dream uses a varied quote from the composer's Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.Blue Heart was written, at Steven Mead's suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.Duration: 15:45

Avebury Circles (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Brand, Michael

The Avebury Circles in Wiltshire (England) are even more spectacular than Stonehenge. They are thought to date from the same time. Who knows what they symbolized or what rituals were performed there? Brand, Michael's piece imagines a misty dawn as the sun rises over the shaped stones, followed by a robed ceremony, a sacrifice and finally a dance.
