A Downland Suite is structured classically, revealing itself in the loose sonata form of the Prelude, the song-like Elegy, the Minuet, and a last movement which utilizes the Rondo. Tight thematic unity between movements gives the work its cohesion. The Elegy melody provides the kernel and the rising fourth interval is seminal. Ireland gives us our clue by repeating the Elegy theme in the last movement. In fact, the opening Rondo theme is virtually the Elegy (but played four times as fast) and the Minuet is the Elegy theme in inversion.

The story of Carmen is set in Seville, Spain, in 1820. It is story of a passionate, fickle, gypsy girl, Carmen, who is one of six major roles in the opera. The story, in four acts, is action-packed, animated, flowing, and never uninteresting. Bizet was well acquainted with Spanish folklore and folk music through his many visits to Spain. For Carmen, he composed a score that is rhythmical, tuneful, and characteristic of the gypsy lifestyle. The adaptation for concert band is a suite in four movements that retains the spirit of the original production.

Extra Score. This suite - originally a brass band work - was commissioned jointly by the Black Dyke Band and the Brass Band Heritage Trust. The composer later made this version for concert band. The work is intended to be played without a break but divides naturally into three sections. Each section is based upon a traditional Welsh melody treated in free variation manner, respectively Gwyr Harlech (Men of Harlech), Suo-Gan (Cradle Song) and Codiad Yr Hedydd (The Rising of the Lark).
