Commissioned by the NIB, the Dutch Wind Music Institute, with the financial support of the 'Fonds voor de scheppende Toonkunst'.CommentaryThis suite brings us back to the 18th century when an important part of the musical life took place in the salons, the favorite quarters of monarchs and important people.There is a ball and we can hear the music in four successive short movements.1. Entree. After an opening fanfare we see the solemn reception of the guests. The composer uses some 17th century musical principles such as the echo dynamics.2. Invitation a la Danse. The guests proceed to the ballroom and are officially introduced. This movement has a 'classical' character.3. Chiaconna. A solemn dance of Spanish origin with a single theme that is repeated with different embellishments and accompaniments.4. Danse Finale. A cheerful dance announces the departure of the guests, but, for sure, the feast will have lasted much longer than this suite.

Good Night Suite is written for beginning band and suitable for the youngest musicians. The level of difficulty is at lowest grade and the rhythms are equal in all wind parts. The register on each instrument is also customized to each part. Some easy solos appears in some sections and in Mvt. 4 there are different rhythm in the melody and bass parts. The level of difficulty is the same for all five movements. The movements may of course be played as single pieces. When all movements are mastered it's possible to play the suite as a kind of fairytale with simple dramaturgy or choreography. Maybe the whole band can be dressed in their pajamas?

In 1922 Halvorsen was commissioned to write incidental music for the bicentennial performance of a comedy written by Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. Masquerade calls for a diverse pallet of music depicting ballet and dance scenes filled with silly play and gaiety. As a result, the music is graceful, as found in Cotillion, playful as in the Bacchanale, and burlesque for the Rooster and Grotesque dances. The original Masquerade Suite for orchestra consisted of eight dances; this arrangement for concert band comprises the first, third, fifth and sixth movements of Halvosens original suite. A delightful programing selection displaying humor, wit and elegance in the four brief movements.

The song became even better known when the renowned Percy Faith Orchestra turned it into an instrumental version. It was the tune of a number of radio shows, and for good reason. Of all of Gordon Jacob's major contributions to the British wind band repertoire, the William Byrd Suite (written in 1923) stands as his most-often programmed work. Though originally based on six movements from William Byrd's Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, this setting for developing band incorporates two contrasting movements including "The Earle of Oxford's Marche" and "Wolsey's Wilde." Composed by Edvard Grieg in 1875, music from Peer Gynt was originally incidental music for Henrik Ibsen's five-act play. The beautiful Solveig's Song is from the second orchestral suite later extracted by Grieg. Johnnie's tender setting opens with a lyric theme scored for the trumpet section. A brief andante section features the woodwinds before returning to the opening melody this time richly scored for full band. A beautiful work for teaching lyric style playing.
