Wellingtons Sieg - Ludwig van Beethoven
After the 'Battle of Vitoria', Beethoven's friend Johann Nepomuk Maelzel talked him into writing a composition for his panharmonicon (a kind of 'mechanical orchestra') to commemorating this battle. The piece, 'Wellingtons Sieg' ('Wellington's Victory') was dedicated to the Prince Regent, later King George IV and first performed in Vienna on 8 December 1813 at a concert to benefit Austrian and Bavarian soldiers wounded at the 'Battle of Hanau', with Beethoven conducting. It was an immediate crowd-pleaser and met with much enthusiasm from early concertgoers and the piece proved to be a substantial money-maker for Beethoven. 'Wellingtons Sieg' is something of a musical novelty. Besides the orchestra, on stage there are two 'sides', British and French, both playing the same instruments: Trumpets, Snare Drums, 'Canon' and Ratchet. The work has two parts: the 'Battle' ('Schlacht') and the 'Victory Symphony' (Sieges Sinfonie). The first part is programme music describing two approaching opposing armies and contains extended passages depicting scenes of battle. It uses 'Rule Britannia' for the British side and 'Marlbrough s'en va-t-en guerre' for the French side. The 'Victory Symphony' exhibits some typical Beethoven composing techniques. It can be considered as a sonata form that, stripped of the development section, comes equipped with an extended coda. Dutch arranger Andreas van Zoelen transcribed 'Wellingtons Sieg' for Symphonic Band.

Triqui-Traqui - Paul Desenne
Commissioned by Gustavo Dudamel for his 2017 New Year's concert with the Vienna Philharmonic, my Caribbean reinterpretation of Strauss' famous Tritsch-Tratsch Polka was deemed tooosefor the occasion, yet the maestro recorded it that year, not in Vienna but in Caracas, with the fabulous performers of his orchestra, the Orquesta Sinfnica Simn Bolvar, and published it on the web as his musical New Year's greetings card. The gesture was meaningful, and bold. I'm convinced that Johann Strauss, a man immersed in the fashions of his city and his time, would have loved the idea; a musical collage which carries in its banter a very strong aesthetic statement. The lightest and most frivolous things seem to always carry the deepest messages, let us not forget. ... ... Suite - Boudewijn Cox
Suite for symphonic wind band is a rich orchestral piece that taxes the musicians to the utmost. The first part starts with a lyric melody in the French horn section, to be taken over by the full orchestra, ending in a kind of "anarchistic entrada". The second part starts with a transparently orchestrated polyphonic web, slowly passing into a richly arranged wave like movement that stops suddenly, leading to the third part's "attaca" start. This third part is a fragile "adagio con tenerezza". The finale is extremely virtuous and feriocious. It is a musical expression of anger, fear and despair.

Concertino for Organ - Thomas Trachsel
This work was created by an order from the wind orchestra Feldmusik Sarnen and its conductor Rolf Schumacher on the occasion of his anniversary concert in the Hofkirche in Lucerne. The organist at the premiere was the organist of the court church Wolfgang Sieber. I tried to illuminate the Hofkirche and its organ in all three movements. In the Toccata the full force of the organ becomes clear, while in the second movement one is reminded more of praying monks in the cloister. In the final, all important topics are processed again. The organ part is very difficult to master, the accompaniment in the wind orchestra should be feasible for a wind orchestra grade 4 (approx. 1st class). (Edition Symphonic Works)
