Score and parts.Born in Richmond Hill, New York, on 10 December 1913, Morton Gould was recognised early on as a child prodigy with theability to improvise and compose. At the age of six he had his first composition published. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School), but his most important teachers were Abby Whiteside (Piano) andVincent Jones (composition).Gould enjoyed an illustrious career. In addition to gaining a Pulitzer Prize for 'Stringmusic', he was Musical America's 1994 Composer-of-the-Year and recieved a Kennedy Center Honor inrecognition of lifetime contributions to American culture.A long-time member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, Gould was elected president of ASCAP in 1986, a post he held until 1994.In 1986 he was elected to the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. He also served on the board of the American Symphony Orchestra League and on the National Endowment for the Arts music panel.

Composed in 1942, Barber's Second Essay is a masterwork of concentrated musical drama, with a richness of texture comprised of highly charged and succinctly organised musical modules. The opening theme has adefinite American flavour, which is followed by a fugal section that evolves from simple tonal patterns to polytonality. After an intensely rhythmic third section, all elements are combined in a huge climax and coda that round offthe work. Occurrence was written as a commissioned work for Randesund School Band in 2014. The symphonic work gives challenges for all instruments and is well suited to work with rhythm, intonation, sound and musicality.Percussion has a central role inthe piece with solo performances, and the beautiful middle part gives the band opportunity to demonstrate its ability to interpretation and musical understanding.Occurence is therefore well suited for competitions as well as concerts.

£228.70Konsertouverture - Viktor Widqvist
This piece was composed in 1937 in the composer's later part of life. Here, Widqvist shows his broad competence as a composer by using both classic marching and late-romantic thematic elements with exciting harmonic twists. In addition, you can find a perfect fugue where the composer shows that he masters this advanced composition technique. One can imagine that Widqvist wanted to show off his entire repertoire of knowledge to take the lead in the unspoken competition with colleague and friend Sam Rydberg. Rydberg had several years earlier composed a concert overture with a similar form. However, this piece is simpler in its design and lacks the technical brilliance that Widqvist shows in his contrapuntal treatment and harmonious diversity.The concert overture was re-orchestrated in 1939 by the composer for symphony orchestra, and it is this version and the original score for a large military orchestra that form the basis for this edition. My aim has been to keep all of Widqvist's original intentions, but still make use of all the possibilities of the modern symphonic wind orchestra. The composer's own arrangements for symphony orchestra have been of great help in this work.- Niclas Blixt -

This arrangement was written for Dragefjellets Musikkorps Bergen for their performance at the Norwegian Wind Band Championships in 2019.The original orchestral work is one of our country's greatest national works for symphony orchestra.It combines Norwegian folk music with the symphonic tradition, but on a slightly different way than Edvard Grieg.Compared to the original score, I have made parts of the work more chamber-music like by making the instrumentation a bit thinner. By doing this, I hope the span in dynamics will benefit the tutti sections as well. £157.50Flumen - Marco Somadossi
In October 2000, the River Po produced its highest flood waters in the last hundred years, provoking a natural disaster of dramatic dimensions. To the thousands of valiant men and women committed to defending their villages against the threat of the flood is dedicated the symphonic poem entitled "Flumen" (river, in Latin), inspired by the thematic material in the Gregorian sequence, "Victimae paschali laudes". The main melody is elaborated and its essence is transfigured in an alchemy of modern sounds from which, at times, archaic echoes emerge. The composition is structured in two parts: the first ("The River") is sullen and menacing, with sounds that portray the turbulent water and the inexorable and frightening rise of the flood;this contrasts with a second section ("The People"), with its primitive rhythms and vaguely multiethnic character (expressed through modal harmonies). Here the work evokes man's ancestral struggle against the forces of nature: the strenuous defence of the Po riverside communities to against the threat of flooding. In the finale, the two themes interweave and overlap, re-establishing a symbolic and primordial equilibrium where man and nature are again in harmony with each other.

Gopak is the first movement of a set of Symphonic Dances written for the Hofstra Unibersity Wind Ensemble, directed by Peter Boonshaft, who commissioned and premiered the work in 2009. Gopak is a tribute to my Polish and Ukrainian roots. My father used to dance traditional Ukrainian dances including the Gopak, and some of my earliest musical memories include the joyful, energetic, and rhythmic feel of those wonderful folk dances.Gopak has a strong feeling of two beats, is accented quite heavily, and is energetic from beginning to end. The melodies are completely original, but the lively feel of the music calls to my mind the energy of the Gopak, notes composer Eric Ewazen.
