Emergence - Grant Michel
Emergence is a positive and uplifting composition for the youngest of concert band students that uses only the first six notes of the Bb concert scale. The sheer joy and excitement beginners exhibit from the discovery inherent in learning their instruments is a wonderful thing. This piece was written as a representation of that joy as these young students emerge from their first foray into music and glimpse of the musicians they can become.

Oceanus was the sea-god of Roman mythology who was the father of rivers and streams, and was personified as a huge river that circled the earth. The piece begins with the rippling of water as it endlessly circles the world, and builds into a depiction of the rolling waves of the deep ocean and the storms that move across the surface of the waters.

The Gates Of Horn - Peter Terry
In the Odyssey, dreams come into the world through one of two gates. If they come through the gates of ivory they are false dreams. However, if they come into the world through the gates of horn they are true dreams that tell the user of things to be, or illuminate truth. The Gates of Horn is a dramatic piece for band that alternates a syncopated fanfare with a bold, yet lyrical theme. These contrasting ideas chase each other throughout the piece.

This arrangement was made for The Suoni Wind Orchestra of Skien, Norway, and performed for the first time at their Promenade Concert "At Sea" at the Ibsen Culture Center, March 8th 2014, being the final number of the concert. Participating this concert was also the Choir Canto Libre and the two vocal soloists were Eli Kristin Hansveen and Andreas Hoff. Since that time this arrangement has been used also at other concerts involving choir and soloists. It is important that tempo is not too slow and one has to be thorough with details in the percussion parts. This work was commissioned by two fanfare bands from Loksbergen and Kortenaken in Belgium, that have merged to form one single ensemble. This festive work has been constructed using two contrasting elements: a rhythmic, fast theme full of character, combined with a melodic, sensitive and slow theme. The title refers to the enthusiastic, fiery character of the opening passage, the fast section, and the renewed passion and drive that has been created due to the merging of the two bands.

Tornado is based on sketches from the Royal Norwegian Naval Forces' Band (SFMK) Composer Workshop with composition students from The Grieg Aacademy in 2012. The working title of the piece, "Workshopping", reflects a young composer on "shopping" for new timbres and effects within the range of instruments and opportunities. The piece starts with a wind from afar (trills and tremolos) which then builds up in block harmony and various fragments that are processed across different keys and harmonies. Tension between chords and dissonances are then pressed up and develops the character and temperament. The title,Tornado, is selected on the basis of the energy and build up,something that can be translated with the weather phenomenon Tornado . Whirl- wind speed translates into the notation with fast tempo, tremolos and technical parts.

During World War II, Winston Churchill initiated the formation of Special Force Commando Units that would prove so effective as to change the course of the war. The First Special Service Force, led by their intrepid colonel,Robert T. Frederick, was perhaps the most famous of these units. In 2015 they were awarded theCongressional Gold Medal, the highest honor the U.S. government can bestow. Frederick's Black Devils is a stirring concert march that pays tribute to this legendary unit.
