Scenes From The Peconic - Carl Strommen
The natural beauty and historical significance of the Peconic River, a tranquil and majestic waterway originating in the pine barrens of eastern Long Island, are depicted in this colorful, flowing and tuneful new piece by Long Island resident Carl Strommen. The luminous scoring is designed to show the band to its best advantage. The 6/8 meter of most of the piece is ideal for representing the flow of the river's steady progress to the sea.

The Journey - Brant Karrick
The Journey attempts to musically portray the experience offeraveling on an early ship, crossing the vast and tumultuous ocean to an uncertain destination. Cast in a rollicking 6/8 meter, the first theme in D minor signifies determination and perseverance, while the second theme signifies hope and faith. The music tosses and turns as the theme is passed to each section and continues to press on to a triumphant landing! The Masks - Ronald Lo Presti
The Masks was composed in 1955 as a two movement orchestral suite that was part of the American Composers' Edition series produced by Eastman in conjunction with Carl Fischer music publishers. Lo Presti, a student of Howard Hanson is perhaps best known for his Elegy for a Young American written for concert band. Indeed, The Masks is reminiscent of the Elegy in its romantic style with rich contemporary harmonies. There is no programmatic significance to the title, according to Lo Presti, other than the fact that the two movements are in contrasting moods, much like the Greek masks of comedy and drama. Gregory Rudgers transcription is authentic to the orginal piece and gives bandseverywhere a new LoPresti piece of significance.

As the title implies, here is a piece from popular composer Sean O'Loughlin that harkens back to ancient times. The minor mode gives the piece a seriousness that students will love. Relics of the Past was inspired by the composer's trip to Yosemite National Park with his family, where he was awed by the majestic, expansive views of the park. From Half Dome to Yosemite Falls to the giant Sequoia trees and more, Yosemite National Park embodies ancient beauty and conflict, reflected here in Relics of the Past. Beginning groups only need to use the first six notes that they learn to play this expressive, haunting piece.

Inferno in the Lost Pines - Larry Clark
Larry Clark does it again, with a bold new piece for young students, using only the first 6 notes of the Bb scale and two eighth notes on the same pitch as the most difficult rhythm. The piece is meant to depict the struggle that firefighters go through when trying to tame an out of control brush fire. The piece goes right into the main theme without introduction and then moves into a more subdued second theme, in contrast. After a short development of the themes with interplay between the winds and percussion, the piece builds to a strong coda: a great way to showcase your beginning band at a concert or festival.
