Carol For Coventry
The classic "Coventry Carol" is an English Christmas carol from the 16th century. The haunting melody became more widely known in1940, after Coventry was bombed by the German Air Force during World War II. On Christmas Day, the BBC broadcasted a service from the ruins of the Coventry Cathedral that included a dramatic choral performance of the work. This single broadcast with the song's melancholy lyrics gave new meaning to the carol, cementing its place in our holiday repertoire. Robert W. Smith's powerful "Carol For Coventry" brings that 1940 cathedral setting to life with a powerful and dramatic opening statement and a flowing, lyrical setting of the classic carol. A very dramatic choice for your holiday program!

Concert Piece - Claude T. Smith
Written for accomplished soloist Brian Bowman, principal Euphonium in the US Air Force Band, as a commissioned work under conductor Col. Arnald Gabriel, this composition is for virtuoso soloist and concert band. It calls for expressive phrasing especially through the Lento and Andante sections. Smith incorporates mixed meters and his signature 7/8 bar to create a dance-like lift. A concert showpiece that contains a challenging cadenza for the soloist. Also provided is the cadenza as performed by Bowman.Solo is grade 6.

Concertino for Organ - Thomas Trachsel
This work was created by an order from the wind orchestra Feldmusik Sarnen and its conductor Rolf Schumacher on the occasion of his anniversary concert in the Hofkirche in Lucerne. The organist at the premiere was the organist of the court church Wolfgang Sieber. I tried to illuminate the Hofkirche and its organ in all three movements. In the Toccata the full force of the organ becomes clear, while in the second movement one is reminded more of praying monks in the cloister. In the final, all important topics are processed again. The organ part is very difficult to master, the accompaniment in the wind orchestra should be feasible for a wind orchestra grade 4 (approx. 1st class). (Edition Symphonic Works)

Antagonist - Larry Clark
In every great story there is always an antagonist, the character of opposing force who is central to the success of the story. Larry Clark has applied this concept to music in a new beginning band piece, fascinating in sound and an excellent cross-curricular tie with English classes, musically illustrating the structure of a good story. This piece is aggressive and at times, purposely antagonizing. Designed with the youngest of players in mind, it works on simple repeated eighth note patterns as the foundation for the melodic material. As is typical in a Larry Clark piece, interesting parts are provided for all instruments, and everyone gets to play the melody.

Ascendance - Robert Thurston
A dynamic concert overture that derives most of its force and material from the striking fanfare motive announced in the opening measure by horns and trumpets (concert Eb, Bb, Ab, Db). The bold opening in compound time is followed by a suave and flowing Adagio in 4/4 meter that makes a lovely tune out of a variant of the opening motive. At measure 103, with a marimba solo, the Allegro style and compound meter return for a rousing and invigorating climax. This piece is a significant addition to the band repertoire for concert and contest. Duration: 6'30" Keys: Eb, Ab Ranges: Trumpet-A, Horn-F, Trombone-G
