Ramses Shaffy was the child of a Polish-Russian mother and an Israeli father. He grew up in Amsterdam, where he also studied. He became very famous as a singer, actor and cabaret artist, mainly in Belgium and the Netherlands. This is his song "Go On Forever", a translation of the Dutch version "We zullen doorgaan", which was a massive hit in 1977.

It is ostensibly a Latin dance at samba tempo but it is slightly tinged with a sense of wistfulness and heartache and it is easy to work out where the imploring words of the title Please don't go fit into the melody. It is not technically difficult to play although it needs an appropriate sense of style and rhythm. Parts are comprehensively cued and the piece works without a bass guitar although it is desirable if possible. Similarly, not all the percussion instruments are vital although they add considerably to the feel of the music if you have them.

The moods go from exuberant Dixieland with optional clarinet and trombone ad lib solos to a somber and dark mood, conjuring up the depth of feelings for which the spirituals are noted. These three separate compositions have been adapted into one suite. The first movement, Behold, the Tabernacle of God, is to be performed with the trumpets and trombones placed in the rear or balcony of the concert hall. The effect is to surround the audience with antiphonal sound, thereby, in effect, placing them in the tabernacle of God. The arrangement is adapted from the original scoring for orchestra and chorus. The choral parts are played by the trumpets and trombones.The second movement, Go forth into the world in peace, is scored for woodwinds, horns, euphonium, tuba, and string bass, in keeping with the original scoring for chorus with strings alone. For the third movement, O be joyful in the Lord, the conductor may determine the placement of the trumpets and trombones, either leaving them in the antiphonal setting, or returning them to the stage.
