The Rocky Road to Dublin
Getting to the heart of leaving home to seek a better life, this mid-19th century Irish folk song is given an authentic yet unique treatment in a setting for younger bands. Starting with a lilting upper woodwind melody with hand percussion, an expressive legato section follows before a return to the original material. Percussionists have several soli sections where they get a chance to shine. A brisk tempo, well-written percussion parts, and plenty of dynamic contrasts make this an excellent choice for concert and festival performances.

When Santa's Away, The Elves Will Play! - Matt Conaway
Like any boss on a deadline, the big guy in red can be a harsh taskmaster, and the elves in his workshop have had enough. They work against a cynical soundtrack of jingling bells until "The Man" steps out, giving way to a raucous celebration (and their first break in weeks). As abruptly as it begins, the party stops when the boss's whistle cuts through, and the grumbling elves return to their monotonous assembly of the year's toys. Great fun for beginning and developing bands!

Symphonic Overture - Charles Carter
Symphonic Overture is a contemporary-sounding overture of medium difficulty so scored that it can be performed with equal success by large and small groups alike. Employing the familiar three-part form (A-B-A), the opening section has a theme which is robust in character and with considerable rhythmic interest. The second theme, slow and expressive in character is a free form based on an opening idea introduced by the first flute. At the return of the first section, the first theme is treated as a fugue subject building to great heights as all four entrances are achieved. As the exposition concludes, the contrapuntal texture gives way to a homophonic quality which closes the piece. The coda, as is characteristic, utilizes material from the first theme.
