Masquerade Suite was composed by Johan Halvorsen, one of the best-kept secrets of Norway. Not only was he an accomplished violinist and conductor, but also he was among the most prominent Norwegian composers in the generation following Edvard Grieg. His compositions develop the national Romantic tradition of his friends Grieg and Svendsen, but his was a distinctive style marked by brilliant orchestration inspired by the French Romantic composers. The original version of Masquerade Suite had nine movements. Paul Noble has selected five of the most suitable movements for band transcription and grouped them into this beautiful suite. The U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C. gave the premiere performance of this work. The first movement, Holberg Overture, sets the mood, pace, and musical themes for the entire suite, with rousing opening themes, followed by a grand fugue in the development section. This is clearly a piece for accomplished bands, giving all wind players a real workout. Each of the succeeding movements has a distinctive style, making the suite a significant addition to the repertoire of the Concert Band. Especially noteworthy is the Arietta, the easiest of the movements, and can easily stand alone with its haunting flute and oboe melodies and dramatic crescendo, the crisp solos in the Molinasque, and the final movement, which is very much like a circus march, fast, lively and short!

£420.99Four Earth Songs (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Putz, Marco
The hymn Nun ruhen alle Wlder (Now All Forests Rest), arranged by J.S. Bach (No. 6, So sei nun, Seele, deine, from Cantata BWV 13), is a guiding light throughout this four-movement composition. Pu?tz wrote this work as a musical outcry against the wilful, profit-driven destruction of our environment. When Bach used the word "ruhen" (to rest) over 350 years ago, it probably had a different nuance from the meaning it has today. At the beginning of the 21st century - the so-called age of progress - "nun ruhen alle Wlder" should mean "now all forests die" . Massive industrialization and globalization, coupled with pure greed, corruption, political scandals, an ever-widening gap between the rich and poor, and other such senseless human actions, are pushing our blue planet closer and closer to the point of no return. This work is not intended to be a ranting accusation. It should remind us of the beauty and harmony that can exist all around us in nature, if we take care of it. Pu?tz hopes that this will, one day, help put a greater emphasis on humanity's survival, and coexistence with nature rather than the exploitation described earlier. All four texts were created by Australian poet Graeme King, whose works were discovered by Pu?tz, by chance on the internet. Pu?tz was especially captivated by King's clarity, and intrigued by the possibilities of adapting and melding the strong rhythmical structure of King's writing with his own musical language. The four movements are as follows: 1. Tears of Nature 2. Grrrevolution 3. Stand up! 4. Tomorrow The world premire of Four Earth Songs took place on 7 July 2009 at the 14th WASBE-Conference in Cincinnati (USA). This work is dedicated in friendship to Jouke Hoekstra, conductor, and the Frysk Fanfare Orkest (the Frisian Fanfare-Orchestra).Duration: 27:30

Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band, this three movement work by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983. Previously available only in rental, this important work is now available for sale.A note from the composer: Divided into three movements, this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instruments as well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement, the brass section "concertizes" in groups of four brass quintets (2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba or baritone), spread from left to right in back. The saxophones (S, A, T, B) are placed in front of the brass quintets, and the woodwinds occupy the front of the stage, with percussion on the left and right side. These groups, like the brass quintets, play in the concertante style, particularly in the first and last movements. At the same time, each movement contains individual solo passages (for example, timpani and flute in Movement I - "Drum Ceremony" and English horn and other low woodwinds in Movement II - "Elegy"). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of wind and percussion players today, and by the incredible growth of wind ensembles, orchestras, and bands in the last 25 years. Around 1540 Tielman Susato, the Belgium trumpet player and composer, established himself in Antwerp as a printer of music. In 1551 he brought out The Third Little Music Book, a collection of instrumental dances. Most of these are arrangements, possible by Susato himself, of popular dance tunes. In keeping with sixteenth-century practice, this book details no specific instrumentation; something to be worked out by the players with whatever available means. Doubtless many of the dances were performed on wind instruments at festive outdoor events. The date of Susato's birth is unknown but estimated to be around 1500. The same applied to his death, which is thought to be somewhere between 1561-64.The third Little Music Book gives several examples of the traditional sixteenth-century genre, the dance pair, a predecessor of the Baroque suite. In such a pair the first dance was often in slow or moderate duple time, the second in quick triple time. This is the case in the pair presented here, which consists of a lively round dance followed by a Hop Up or saltarello.Titles in the Prelude Series are specifically scored for bands with few, if any, bass instruments but will sound well on larger ensembles. The bass line is playable by any combination of bass clarinet, bassoon, baritone saxophone, trombone, euphonium or tuba; in the event that none of these is available, the part for trombone/euphonium (B flat TC) can be played by tenor saxophone. The tuned percussion part is entirely optional and can be played by any available instrument(s). Each piece also includes a preliminary exercise. This is always in the same key as the accompanying piece and consists of a scale and chord progression that can be used for improving ensemble, balance, intonation and instrumental facility by changing tempo, articulation and dynamics.Duration: 2.00

The leviathan, a demoniacal sea monster that appears as a dragon or serpent, is considered in the Old Testament to be the embodiment of evil. The defeat of the demon is prophesied in Isaiah 27:1: "On that day the Lord will punish with his cruel sword, his mighty and powerful sword Leviathan that primeval sea-serpent, that writhing serpent Leviathan, and slay the monster of the deep ."The composer's main goal is to create an atmosphere thick with agitation, tumult and extreme tension rather than express specific events musically. The monstrous form of the leviathan slowly emerges from the abyss of primordial sounds at the start of the piece, recalling the eternal conflict between good and evil.Duration: 8.45

£154.99Symphonic Variations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob
This composition is based on a passacaglia theme, in which artistic perfection, symphonic drama and oriental melody lines play a role. The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the "Symphonic Variations" are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan, himself originally an organist, took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J.S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to a musical adventure, in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony, and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally the whole flows into a martial theme, in which the ostinato accompaniment n the descant derives from the passacaglia theme.Duration: 11:15

£60.00Derbyshire Cavalry Marches (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Haydn, Joseph - Hash & Walters
Haydn wrote these marches during his second trip to London in 1794-95. The original autograph is titled "Two Marches Composed by J. Haydn for Sir Henry Harpur... to the Volunteer Cavalry of Derbyshire, embodied in the year 1794". Scored for the typical military band of the time, the instrumentation included a trumpet, two horns, two clarinet, two bassoons and a serpent (a curved bass instrument played with a cupped mouthpiece). Percussion parts would have been added by the regimental drum major and played by soldiers, not regular musicians. Due to a lack of printed marching books at the time, selection had to be short to facilitate easier memorisation. In this arrangement for modern concert band, the marches have been transposed from the original keys to Bb and F Major. Percussion parts have also been added by the arrangers and can be used at the director's discretion. Though these marches have been scored with the intermediate level band in mind, the integrity of the originals have been maintained, making them of interest to musicians and music students alike, at all levels.
