Eye of the Hawk was inspired by the beautiful and majestic Hudson Valley. I wanted to base the piece on something that would resonate with the band who would be premiering it ... my local, exceptional, middle school band. The hawkbecame our spirit animal, and represented to me many of the qualities that are inherent in a young person of that age - bold, instinctive, elegant - a fierce creature who owns the sky. This work was commissioned by the Lampasas High School Band, Lampasas, Texas, Richard Hooper, Director, in memory of their classmate and friend, Chris Cruz, and his father and sister. Chris was a saxophone player, Eagle Scout and junior in high school. He was a much-loved member of the high school band and this work was commissioned in honor and memory of him. The title refers to Chris favorite time of the year: the end of summer, band camp, the start of school, the start of fall, football games, band competitions and all the other fun times that come along for high school band students "as the days become shorter." Energetic and driving, much like the life that Chris lived, this work is meant to be a celebration of his life and spirit.

George Washington and the Continental Armys withdrawal from Philadelphia to Valley Forge was one of the darkest chapters of the Revolutionary War. The demoralized mood of the troops is conveyed by the Revolutionary-era hymn Chester in a minor setting. A tempo change ushers in a new spirit as the Continental Army perseveres through the harsh winter and becomes a hardened fighting force. Finally, Chester is triumphantly presented in a major key as the now-formidable army emerges, ready to take up the fight and secure Americas independence.

This concert march heralds back to the early days of the oil boom in the early 1900s. Commissioned by the Glenpool High School Band, commemorating one of the early oil field discoveries (the "Glenn Pool") in Oklahoma, this march recollects the undeniable spirit of the early petroleum pioneers and oil field laborers (called "roughnecks"). The roughnecks worked long, hard hours to drill for the "black crude" which helped to define the Tulsa area as the "oil capitol of the world" for many decades. The spirited and energetic style of the march makes it a "must play" for festival competition or concert performance.
