Cyclone (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Oare, Michael
The power and intensity of our ever-changing marine environment is portrayed in this descriptive work for young players. Incorporating a simple melodic motif along with syncopated rhythmic energy, Michael Oare effectively depicts the power of nature's most violent storms. Opening with a calm, yet foreboding introduction, the work quickly transforms as the storm draws near. Thundering bass drum rolls, driving rhythmic and melodic ostinatos, and dynamic and textural contrasts propel the piece towards a bold and exciting conclusion.Duration: 3.00

Wind Storm (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - O'Reilly, John
In early December 2011, a powerful wind storm passed through Southern California, leaving thousands without electricity and severe damage to many mature trees. Written during this event, this piece uses sharply syncopated rhythms, the key of C minor and prominent percussion to convey the mood that prevailed during the storm. As is always the case, calm, clear weather returned and the lyrical slow section in E-flat major brings that to mind.Duration: 3:45

Ants in My Pants (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bate, Jane Russell
This piece is a sophisticated rag on a not-so-sophisticated subject - a literal case of ants in the pants. As the hapless fellow performs his syncopated gyrations caused by the ants, the music quickens and we hear the victim slapping and scratching in an effort to rid himself of the tickly creatures. Brass players will enjoy flutter-tonguing, glisses, and wa-was in this highly entertaining tune.Duration: 3:10

Maple Leaf Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Named after the leaf displayed on Canada's flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school's symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!Duration: 4:15

Centennial Salute (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
Just based on its title, this piece has to be celebratory and up-beat, which it is! It opens with a stately fanfare, first played on the low brass before the entire band joins in. This gives way to a contrasting lyrical theme which develops until it joins up with the fanfare to complete the opening section. A lively and heavily syncopated vivo follows, cast as a traditional march, complete with a 'bass strain' and trio. After the original march theme returns, a climax leads back to a reprise of the majestic opening, which brings the piece to an appropriately triumphant close.Duration: 7:30

Cold Brook March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - O'Reilly, John
Cold Brook March is perfect for your band's first Concert. The ranges are comfortable for all instruments and the second clarinets never cross the break. Fun, syncopated rhythms provide a great deal of interest throughout. Short percussion solos introduce both the first strain and the second strain which is in the contrasting relative minor key. The break up strain pits the woodwinds against the brass with the percussion section holding it all together.Duration: 2.30

Two Chinese Folk Songs (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - O'Reilly, John
The two folk songs in this arrangement are contrasting in style but they both share the characteristic pentatonic scale that is a staple of Chinese and other Asian cultures. Jasmine Flower musically portrays the lovely scent and beauty of the flower that is often worn in the hair of Asian women. Feng Yang Ge is a much livelier song that combines the pentatonic scale with syncopated rhythms. "Feng Yang" is a region in the Anhui Province of China and "Ge" means song.Duration: 2.10

Glacier Bay (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hodges, Steve
Inspired by the majestic Alaskan landscape, Glacier Bay provides plenty of opportunities for dynamic and expressive playing by the young musicians. Following a brief introduction, the main theme is presented first by the trumpets and then by the low brass and trumpets in a lively and flowing manner. The active syncopated accompaniment patterns in the low brass and woodwinds provide an effective contrast to the melody. The B section of the piece moves smoothly into a stately, alla breve tempo with a clarinet choir making the first presentation of the melody. Following a very peaceful conclusion to the B section, an abbreviated restatement of the A section melody leads to the dynamic ending. Duration: 3.30

Chino Hills (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - O'Reilly, John
Syncopated brass and driving percussion open this sparkling concert selection. The rhythmic woodwind melody that enters after the brief introduction is set in the Dorian mode, a tonality that dominates the remainder of the piece. The very prominent percussion section gives way to a more delicate woodblock, triangle and tambourine ostinato that accompanies the light hearted second theme. Trumpets now take over the melody and the style hints at the early Hispanic roots of Chico Hills. A lyrical theme in the original Dorian mode highlights the slower middle section that builds to a dramatic climax before returning to the opening Allegro and a short exciting conclusion.
