Suite (From Lady MacBeth Of The Mtsensk District) - Dimitri Shostakovich
In addition to 15 symphonies, the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich (1906 - 1975) also wrote ballet music and a small number of operas. The best-known opera of this composer, who was suppressed by the communist regime, is "Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District". Steven Verhaert made a selection from this work, creating this excellent arrangement which will be a challenge to any quality orchestra

10W-60 is the name of an engine oil that is entirely synthetic, has a very long life and is used mainly in vehicles from which high performance is required. In this way the composer makes the link with speed and energy, two important elements that can also be found in this three-part composition. Naoya Wada dedicated this piece to the famous Japanese trumpet-player Kazuki Hayasaka, and incorporated elements of boogie, Gershwin and rock.

Townscape was composed for the centenary of the St. Cecilia concertband from Oudenburg, a town which also inspired the composer throughout this work. The first part depicts a train slowly approaching from afar and then vanishing into the distance again. This is rendered by a sort of repetitive pulse in the music. This is followed by some serious action with jet skis on the Sinnesael lake. Their spectacular twists and turns are transformed into an exuberant theme and a middle section with several changes of time signature. After that comes a restful, lyrical Nocturne, a musical painting of the mill at night. The work concludes with a lively finale that is an ode to dailylife in Oudenburg, a place where people take initiative and there is plenty to see and do.

Thousands of ruins large and small remain locked in a dense world of jungle, with huge crumbled cities having lain forgotten for eight centuries.II. Glorious ruins still ariseII characterizes this civilization from glory, to destruction, to the present with its buried ruins. To begin, stone cities wait silently cloaked in jungle, steadfastly eluding discovery. As time passes slowly, the music reflects back to the glory of the Maya. Though wishing to turn back the hands of time for this incredible civilization, its fate and the gravity of its loss are carried forward in the profound silence of eternal loss.
