    Ave Maria - André Waignein

Ave Maria, an excerpt from the Missa Solemnis, was written by Andr Waignein at the request of the Aosta Valley Regional Council, in Italy. Missa Solemnis contains all the musical parts that are used to accompany liturgical rites. However, the composer was keen to include an Ave Maria in memory of his mother, who was a very religious person and especially revered the Virgin Mary. This Ave Maria reveals a shimmering melody with very discreet orchestral support that allows the vocal or instrumental soloist to express their emotions through exceedingly generous musical phrases. Waignein has made this work for solo soprano or tenor and band, butit's also a very beautiful piece for several solo instruments such as flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, alto saxophone or trumpet. The composer naturally dedicated this Ave Maria to his mother. This moving piece will undoubtedly captivate your audience.

The Four Noble Truths - Philip Sparke

The Four Noble Truths are the most basic expression of the teaching of Buddha and therefore still form the guidelines for Buddhists to this day. The four truths are Dukkha, which describes times of major stress in our lives - birth, aging, desire and death; Samudaya which describes those parts of our life that induce stress, feeling, craving, desire; Nirodha which tells us how to eliminate those aspects of our lives which induce stress and Magga which describes the eight didciplines which can help us eliminate the origins of stress from our lives. It can be seen from these over-simplified definitions, that the Four Noble Truths fall into two pairs, the first two describingthe origins of stress and the second two describing how we can reduce stress. To reflect this, the four movements of this work are also combined into two pairs - two quick movements and two slow movements. A fascinating work from this great English composer.

When the Spirit Soars - Philip Sparke

Music is perhaps unique among the performing arts in its ability to express and convey the subtlest nuances of human emotion This ability is exploited in When the Spirit Soars which attempts to capture in music the feeling of extreme happiness, sometimes almost too much to bear, that we all experience at one time or another. Often this happiness can be tinged with sadness (we can cry with joy, after all) and it is this conflict of emotions which this piece describes. There are moments of doubt as the piece progresses, but it ends in undiluted joy.

    Inferno - Sven Van Calster

On 25th May 2011 a huge fire broke out in the Kalmthoutse Heath nature reserve north of Antwerp. Within a very short time more than 600 hectares of heath land went up in flames. The effect on the surrounding environment was huge. The fire left deepscars affecting the residents, those responsible for heath land, and also the members of the fire brigade who for several days risked their lives to fight the fire. The composition Inferno begins majestically and on a huge scale, exactly as theKalmthoutse Heath is. Soon a theme is introduced into the work in which the magnificent beauty of nature can be heard. We then hear the fires on the heath set to music. Even thefire helicopter can be heard, together with the first discussions thattook place after the alarm was raised with the Kalmthoutse fire brigade. One fact remains at the centre of this work, however: the natural beauty and splendour of the heath landscape. This is expressed at the start of the work in a theme that recursthroughout the piece. Towards the end it is finally replaced by a peaceful conclusion, representing the hope for a speedy regeneration of this wonderful nature reserve.Download here the audio file for this book.

    Gypsy Dance - Joseph Compello

You may know this composer from the exceptional music he has written for beginning band, but now you will hear why many think he is one of the best writers of concert band music at any level. This exciting piece weaves exotic gypsy melodies together with compound meter designed to challenge the moderately advanced band. It is the percussion section that drives this piece, using rhythms that are typical of Eastern European folk music. Gypsy Dance is a great way to introduce students to this genre.
