Three Washington Statues was commissioned by the United States Army Band "Pershings Own", led by Colonel Thomas H. Palmatier. Washington D.C. contains some of the world's most iconic monuments, memorials and statues. Philip Sparke has chosenthree of these as the inspiration for this piece: 'The Lincoln Memorial' in the form of a Greek Doric temple in which the composer depicts the grandeur of this monument; 'The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial' on which steps the iconic speech 'I havea dream' was given - the music is both reverential as well as powerful referring to Martin Luther Kings' speech; and the 'Encore' statue in memory of the world famousAfrican-American composer, pianist and bandleader Duke Ellington. In this finalmovement, Philip Sparke catches the virtuosic, energetic and unique dynamism of Ellingtons' music.

Ugo Papurello, president of the ''I Filarmonici'' band from San Carlo Canavese (Turin), commissioned this piece to celebrate the group's twentieth anniversary. The opening fanfare is an eloquent and fitting introduction to a solemn celebration. It is followed by the allegro, which has a modal feel and is characterised by a succession of rhythms representing the liveliness ad enthusiasm that have always characterised this band. The andante symbolises a moment of reflection and nostalgic reminiscence. The allegro is repeated as an expression of the hope that the band will continue to set itself increasingly ambitious goals. The fanfare brings back the joyous atmosphere of this special occasion and sets a formal seal on the band's twentieth anniversary.

This composition describes the atmosphere of the musical life in the village, concentrated around the market place or the ... village green.I. To play under the trees: A quiet, charming evocation.II. To play for the landlady and her daughter: The older musicians do their utmost to please the mother, whereas the youngsters try to draw the attention of her daughter.III. To play at the annual Saint Cecilia Festivities: This is festive music, sometimes solemn, sometimes caustic, always light and fresh; towards the end there is a strong enlargement and a stretto. This work was selected by the Belgian Radio for the 1977 ERU Contest in Yougoslavia and was performed by the Belgian Gendarmerie Band conducted by Roland Cardon.

A graceful choral then captures the magnificent setting of the Mayan world. After a folk melody for the populace, the agitated scene of a sacrificial ceremony is portrayed. The regal theme appears again in the coda, concluding in brilliance. This great civilization vanished in 10 A.D., leaving only remnants of a remarkably prosperous world. Thousands of ruins large and small remain locked in a dense world of jungle, with huge crumbled cities having lain forgotten for eight centuries.II. Glorious ruins still ariseII characterizes this civilization from glory, to destruction, to the present with its buried ruins. To begin, stone cities wait silently cloaked in jungle, steadfastly eluding discovery. As time passes slowly, the music reflects back to the glory of the Maya. Though wishing to turn back the hands of time for this incredible civilization, its fate and the gravity of its loss are carried forward in the profound silence of eternal loss. Commissioned by the Michigan State University Alumni Band, this three movement work by Karel Husa was the winner of the first Louis Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in 1983. A note from thecomposer: 'Divided into three movements, this work is a display of virtuoso passages given to solo instruments as well as to the groups of the ensemble. In the Fanfare of the first movement, the Brass section concertises in groupsof four Brass quintets (2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba or Baritone), spread from left to right in back. The Saxophones (SATB) are placed in front of the Brass quintets, and the Woodwinds occupy the front of the stage, withPercussion on the left and right side. These groups, like the Brass quintets, play in the concertante style, particularly in the first and last movements. 'At the same time, each movement contains individual solo passages(for example, Timpani and Flute in Movement I - Drum Ceremony and English Horn and other low Woodwinds in Movement II - Elegy). The composition of this piece was prompted by the excellence of Wind and Percussion players today, andby the incredible growth of Wind ensembles, orchestras, and bands in the last 25 years. It is intended for their enjoyment.'

Scottish Dances is based on three Scottish traditionals: Cock of the North, The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond and Marie's Wedding. I. Cock of the North's name is used for multiple things or events. For example for a locomotive to a famous, it seems, delicious liqueur, and rallies to snowboard competitions. Furthermore is "Cock O' the North " a nickname of a famous Duke. (The 4th Duke of Gordon). In this composition Cock of the North (a Jig) is a traditional Scottish bagpipe tune, regularly played on tattoos by Pipe Bands. Not infrequently the drummers sing the text. Auntie Mary, had a canary, Up the leg of her trousers While she was sleeping Iwas peeping Up the leg of her trousers. II. " The Bonnie Bank's O'Loch Lomond " is about a sad story that took place during an revolt against the British. In 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie had to retreat. Two of his men were captured. One was convicted and executed, while the other was released. The spirit of the executed soldier would arrive in Scotland via the 'low road' (underworld) before his companion, who had still a long way to go. You'll take the high road And I'll take the low road And I'll be in Scotland afore ye But me and my true love will never meet again On the Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond III. In a Scottish wedding, after the official ceremonies, there is often danced. This is called a ceilidh. For this we use traditional Scottish music such as "Marie's Wedding '. Mid dance we go back to the church, where a lovely song in honor of the couple sounds. Marie's Wedding has been recorded by Van Morrison (among many others). Composed in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the title of this dramatic setting is taken from a biblical passage and quoted by Dr. King in his celebrated I Have a Dream speech in 1963. After a fanfare-like introduction, the piece is comprised of three sections. The Dream relects on Dr. King's famous speech. This is followed by Strife, which recalls the violence of the civil rights movement, and finally Hope, which looks to a brighter future and is a setting of the hymn We Shall Overcome. Performed with or without the narration, this is a stirring work for young bands. Dur: 5:20
