A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!

"The idea behind this song is to remind everyone, for all those who have forgotten, how colourful and exciting Christmas was during their childhood. Christmas is a magical time and, after all, no matter how old we are, we are all still children at heart." These words were written by Chris de Burgh about his 2009 hit, The Bells of Christmas, inspired by Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Simon Fahnholz has now made an excellent version of this Christmas hit for concert band.

The Trattamars (Tratta March) was originally written for 'Il trattamento miracolo', an ensemble of five, performing light-hearted musical acts for the young and the old. This march is played when the members of the group appear on stage. The Dutch composer of the march, Matthias van Nispen tot Pannerden, studied classical saxophone as well as band conducting and composition at the Brabant Conservatory in Tilburg. He is a baritone saxophonist with the Orkest van de Koninklijke Luchtmacht (Band of the Royal Netherlands Air force). He is also active as a freelance conductor and composer.
