Valentin's Chorale (Patron of Lovers and Bridesmaids) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Doss, Thomas

This piece came about as a Christmas gift for Valentin, the composers' youngest son. Valentin--more commonly Valentine in English--is also the patron saint of lovers. Zodiac Dances (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip

Six miniatures based on animals from the Japanese 'Junishi'. Zodiac Dances was commissioned by the Izumiotsu City Band, Osaka, Japan to celebrate their 50th anniversary. Sparke had previously written the piece, Prelude to a Celebration for the band, and in composing a new piece for their 50th anniversary wanted to personalise it to reflect the band's history. He chose to write a set of six dance-miniatures based on the decades following the band's foundation and the equivalent signs from the Japanese 'Junishi'. During the piece, all aspects of true musicianship come to the surface. Energetic playing, phrasing, melodic music making, technique and a spectacular finale make this work a perfect test or concert work! Duration: 11.00

Academic Festival Overture (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Brahms, Johannes - Takahashi, Tohru

The German composer Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) wrote his Academic Festival Overture in the summer of 1880, together with the Tragic Overture. The occasion was the honorary degree which Brahms had received a year before from the University of Breslau. Initially, Brahms had sent a thank-you note, but he was expected to express his gratitude with a composition. The premiere took place on 4 January, 1881 - conducted by the composer himself - in Breslau. For this sparkling work, Brahms used various German student songs as a basis in an inventive way - and a little jestingly. Owing to the accessible development, lyrical warmth, humour, and persuasiveness, the Academic Festival Overture is still a popular concert work. This transcription for concert band, which has been written by Tohru Takahashi, does justice to the original composition.Duration: 9:45

For we have seen his star in far-off eastern lands and we have come to worship Him."II. The Temple of Jerusalem: And look! The curtain secluding the Holiest Place in the Temple was split apart from top to bottom: and the earth shook and rocks broke, and tombs opened and many godly men and women who had died, come back to life again.III.
